Just 3 days after merging administrative boundaries with Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a meeting to discuss and plan to improve the medical capacity of Con Dao special zone to best serve the people, leaving no one behind, even the farthest places.

In the immediate future, the City Health Department will send skilled doctors to rotate to the island; plan to develop and improve the medical capacity of the City's only special zone.

Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, acknowledged that the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center not only serves the people living on the island but also receives tens of thousands of tourists and staff every year.

Over the years, the Center has been newly built and invested in quite modern equipment, however the biggest difficulty is still the source of medical personnel with specialized qualifications. The problems of emergency, childbirth, kidney dialysis, and sea accidents - which are very specific to the island - have been a concern here for decades.

Therefore, after the merger, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health immediately planned to improve the medical capacity of Con Dao special zone.

Specifically, the Department will send skilled doctors to rotate to the island according to each specialty: obstetrics, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics; at the same time, organize remote consultations and online continuing education (CME) for medical staff of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.

According to the Director of the City Health Department, priority will be given to developing safe and on-site obstetrics with a full obstetrics team, anesthesia, resuscitation, and neonatal resuscitation, reducing dependence on transfers by train and helicopter.

In addition, the Department strengthens the trauma, internal medicine and pediatric emergency capacity of the Center, meeting common medical care needs in Con Dao such as sea accidents, tourist accidents, emergency needs for children and the elderly.

In addition, the construction of an on-site blood bank to ensure safe emergency care in obstetrics, surgery and critical situations is also a priority. In the long term, the City Health Department will develop a project with specific policies aiming to form a general hospital with an appropriate scale right in Con Dao; strengthen links and professional support with major hospitals such as Hung Vuong Hospital, Children's Hospital 1, Binh Dan Hospital, and Gia Dinh People's Hospital.

In particular, the Department of Health coordinates with medical universities in the City to develop a training program for resident physicians with rotational practice at the Con Dao Medical Center/Hospital; at the same time, propose policies to retain and attract medical personnel to work long-term in Con Dao.

It is expected that the Department of Health will organize a field survey in Con Dao with the participation of leading experts to assess the reality and develop a suitable, feasible and sustainable implementation plan.

The first rotation of specialized doctors from the City to work at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center will begin on the occasion of National Day, September 2./.
