Boosting momentum for Singapore-Australia relations

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will visit Melbourne from March 4-6 to attend the 9th Singapore-Australia Leaders' Meeting and the 2nd ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.

According to Straits Times , during the three-day visit, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will meet his host counterpart Anthony Albanese at a summit established within the framework of the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2015.

The Singapore-Australia Leaders’ Meeting is an annual forum for the two Prime Ministers to discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international developments. The most recent meeting was held in June 2023 in Singapore.

This year’s ASEAN-Australia Special Summit marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations. Australia is ASEAN’s first and longest-standing dialogue partner (since 1974).

The Straits Times stated that this conference in Melbourne will reaffirm the long-standing and substantive relationship between ASEAN and Australia, and discuss measures to deepen and expand cooperation, especially in the green and digital economies .

The leaders will exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concern and ways to continue working with Australia to build an open, inclusive and stable region.

In 2023, Australia was Singapore's 10th largest trading partner with total two-way trade turnover reaching 29.6 billion USD.

According to statistics as of 2022, Singapore is Australia's 7th largest bilateral trading partner and 5th largest foreign investor.
