On the afternoon of August 2, the My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board (My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board) held a workshop to report the preliminary results of the second excavation project at the L tower group of My Son temple complex (Thu Bon commune, Da Nang city).

After the first excavation in 2019, in view of the cultural, historical, architectural and artistic values, especially new discoveries that need to be further clarified, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1263/QD-BVHTTDL (dated May 6, 2025) allowing the My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board to coordinate with the Institute of Monuments Conservation, the Institute of Archaeology and the CM Lerici Foundation (Italy) to continue archaeological excavations at Group L.

The second excavation was carried out from May 9 to July 30 with a permitted excavation area of 150m² (10m x 15m/1 hole), Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Quy - Institute of Archaeology presided over the excavation.

This is considered an important project, from which there is a plan to preserve the L tower group - one of the few last tower groups of My Son that needs urgent excavation and preservation.

Second excavation at Tower L

Over the past two months, new excavation pits have been opened and systematic stripping of the collapsed material layers inside and around the L1 structure has been carried out to reveal architectural features and study the sequence of collapse and the evolution of the monument over time.

From the initial results of the research, archaeologists determined that the L-tower architecture dates back quite late, around the 13th century, and could have been used until the early 14th century. This is the first time that the architectural dating has been more clearly determined based on the excavation results achieved.

Speaking at the workshop reporting the preliminary results of the project, Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet - Deputy Director in charge of the My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board emphasized: The results of this excavation at the L tower group are new discoveries, contributing to a clearer identification of the richness and diversity of the cultural space of the temple tower area, proving that the heritage site still has many unique values contained underground.

These discoveries contribute to the history of conservation, excavation and restoration of My Son, which is a valuable resource for exploiting tourism development and attracting visitors.

" The unit is also interested in promoting the value of the L tower area after excavation, wishing to turn this place into an archaeological excavation tourist attraction, so that visitors have the opportunity to admire a My Son not only with its existing values above ground but also containing the cultural depth underground ," Mr. Khiet shared.

Tower L group is located on a small hill, the remaining trace is only a small wall.

Group L is located about 75m south of Group BCD, on top of a small hill. Similar to the late-built temple tower groups in My Son valley such as Group H and G. This high position not only provides a wide view, covering the entire temple tower complex, but also creates a prominent landscape in the overall space.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the site of group L was recorded by Henri Parmentier (French Institute of the Far East) as an architecture like a long, tiled room with two opposite openings.

The first excavations conducted by CM Lerici in 2019 recorded an additional architectural foundation located to the west of the long room L, the archaeologists named the earlier discovery L1 and the later discovery L2. L1 and L2 are located on an east-west architectural axis and are surrounded by walls.

The initial results of the second excavation contributed to the identification of L-shaped structures dating from quite late, around the 13th century.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Quy - Institute of Archaeology, who presided over the second excavation, added: After completing the research work on group L, both the excavation area and structure L2 were filled in to ensure long-term protection of the relic.

During this excavation, research on artifacts discovered in previous excavations continues. Research and cataloguing of artifacts recovered during the current excavation will be completed in the next phase of the project, scheduled to be implemented next year.
