Inter Miami holds its breath waiting for Messi

Lionel Messi suffered a muscle injury in his right leg during Inter Miami's 2-2 draw with Necaxa in the Leagues Cup on August 3.

According to The Times , Inter Miami's medical team has not been able to determine Messi's exact return date, after the Argentine superstar completed medical tests to check the extent of his injury. This is bad news for coach Javier Mascherano, as Inter Miami prepares to enter an important stage of the season.

Messi left the pitch in the 11th minute of the match between Inter Miami and Necaxa after a collision that resulted in an injury. The incident occurred when Messi broke into the penalty area and was sandwiched between two Necaxa defenders, Raul Sanchez and Alexis Pena.

The Argentine star fell to the ground, clapped his hands in frustration and tried to continue playing for a few minutes before being replaced by Federico Redondo. Inter Miami hope Messi can return soon, if the club enters the knock-out stages of the Leagues Cup.

The Argentine superstar has scored 18 goals and provided nine assists in 18 MLS games this season. Over the past month, Messi has been in great form, scoring or assisting in six of his last seven games, including five consecutive doubles.

That has made Inter Miami more reliant on Messi, resulting in Leo playing the full 90 minutes in the club's last four games, up until the Necaxa match. It's worth remembering that Messi has a history of muscle injuries, having missed a number of games since joining Inter Miami in 2023.
