The Slovak Prime Minister met with the head of NATO before the opening of the European Union (EU) Summit from December 14-15 in Brussels (Belgium). According to Mr. Fico, there is no military solution to the conflict in Ukraine and there are no peace initiatives in this direction from the EU or NATO.

Slovakia essentially believes that military aid does not help resolve the situation in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Mr. Stoltenberg asserts that stopping aid will not shorten the conflict but on the contrary prolong it.

Stoltenberg also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not ready for peace. The Kremlin is preparing for the long haul as it ramps up arms production and seeks more supplies from China and North Korea. Stoltenberg said that “NATO is not involved in the conflict but supports Ukraine’s right to self-defense.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Fico hopes that Slovakia's different views with NATO on the Ukraine conflict will not complicate the dialogue process between the two sides, but still emphasizes that he "sees no reason to change the Slovak government's position with NATO".
