On the evening of July 5 at the Army Theater (Hanoi), the play "Deep Night" - an impressive work by Quoc Thao Theater, jointly produced by Phu Nhuan District Culture - Sports Center and TH Entertainment Company - left a deep echo at the 5th National Professional Art Theater Festival on the Image of the People's Public Security Soldier - 2025.
The play "Deep Night" has the participation of many young actors trained at Quoc Thao Theater.
When Quoc Thao lets reason and love collide
With the script and direction of NS Quoc Thao, "Deep Night" brings to the capital audience the story of breaking up a human trafficking and cybercrime ring. It is a tragic song about a police officer when reason and love collide to the end, when darkness is no longer outside but reigns in the very home they thought they were protecting.
The play begins as a normal case: The "Deep Night" task force is established to attack the den of criminals who specialize in kidnapping, luring gullible people into high-paying jobs and then turning them into "digital criminals". The hunt for Fox - the nickname of an important link in the transnational high-tech crime ring - has begun. But the truth takes an unexpected turn: "Fox" is Nam, the biological son of Lieutenant Colonel Thai, the head of the task force.

The tragedy intensified when Mr. Thai and his teammates were traveling across the border, infiltrating the criminal den to rescue the victims who were kidnapped and forced to get involved in online murders... without knowing that the accomplice was his own son, and "Fox" was hiding right in the seemingly happy home of Mr. Thai (Quoc Thao) and Binh (Tuyet Thu). The criminals were no longer strangers, but were their own flesh and blood.
The detail of the birthday watch - a gift Thai gave his son when he turned 18 - became the clue to uncover the whole truth. When it was discovered at the scene of a crime. Mr. Thai confronted his son and Mrs. Binh wanted him to release him so that she could trace the data and information about the criminal network. She and Mr. Thai are two people who sacrificed their whole lives to protect the people, now they have to face the truth: their son is a criminal. This is the best performance of Meritorious Artist Tuyet Thu, artist Quoc Thao and actor Truong Phuc (as Cao - Nam).

Characters that touch the deepest emotions
Artist Quoc Thao in the role of Lieutenant Colonel Thai brought a very real image of a soldier - his character did not shout, did not idealize. He was a father, a cadre, a man facing the struggle of conscience. Quoc Thao chose a restrained, compressed acting style - and that is why, every time he looked at the file, every time he touched his watch, every time he stood silently in the middle of an empty room... made the audience choke up.
Artist Huu Nghia, in the role of Major Kiet - a comrade and close friend - is a solid support for the psychological space. No longer the funny person as usual, Artist Huu Nghia portrays a compassionate character Kiet: both a steadfast soldier and a friend who knows when to be silent.
There was a scene where Kiet just stood behind Mr. Thai, gently placing his hand on his shoulder – but that touch contained hundreds of unspoken words. Kiet forced Thai to leave the case to avoid making mistakes.
Young actors are given the opportunity to participate in the play "Deep Night" performed for the first time in the capital.
Meritorious Artist Tuyet Thu (playing Binh - Mr. Thai's wife) - with her forte in acting, portrayed the image of a mother who suffered double the pain: her husband was a law enforcement officer, and her son was a criminal. She did not have many lines, but her eyes when she saw her husband return, when she heard that her son was wanted, and when she asked her husband to forgive her son, were all filled with a sense of loss that Tuyet Thu portrayed very well.
Actor Truong Phuc – playing Nam/Cao – is a highlight of the young actors. Nam is a multi-layered character: arrogant, cold, intelligent… but also a son who lived in an emotional void with a father who was too devoted to his career. The scene where Nam confronts his father and says: "Dad has chosen justice, I choose a different way of life" – portrayed by Truong Phuc with a lost look in his eyes and a choked voice – a scene that made the entire audience choke up.
This is Truong Phuc's first tragic role as he has a knack for acting well and is a familiar comedic face on Quoc Thao stage.

The stage does not propagate, but moves.
"Deep Night" does not choose a direct narrative, but uses modern theatrical language - light dividing the space, compressed sound, concise rhythm, suggesting more than saying. The background music and the song "Sing About You - The Soldier of the Grassroots Police" (composed by Captain Nguyen Van Tra, performed by singer Thanh Chuong) resonate at the right emotional point, like a farewell to damaged values, and people forced to make silent sacrifices.

The play ends with a look between father and son – a light of tolerance and forgiveness that turns a family tragedy into an opportunity to help their children reform. The play raises a question: Can justice save a family? Is conscience strong enough to light up the remaining people among those who have crossed the line?
And the message that artist Quoc Thao sent in the play is that no matter how deep the night is, if people still keep a small light in their hearts - of faith, of morality, of humanity - then justice is not alone.

The best quote from the character Kiet played by artist Huu Nghia: "If you believe your child can change, don't use handcuffs, but use faith" is a profound message about forgiveness and hope.
This shows that love can be the highest form of "punishment" - when it awakens conscience and awakens people. This is a "valuable" line not only in content but also in moral depth in the art of theater.
