France arrests notorious robber and gang that stole millions of dollars in jewelry

AFP news agency reported on September 27 that French police have arrested five suspects, including a notorious jewelry robber, in connection with an armed daylight robbery at a high-end Piaget jewelry store in Paris.

In the robbery on the afternoon of August 1, the gang stole jewelry and watches with a total value of 10-15 million euros (256.7-385 billion VND), according to police estimates.

Prosecutors said at the time that three people were directly involved in the robbery, including two men in suits and a woman in a dress. At least one robber was armed, but no one was injured in the incident.

The shop is located on Rue de la Paix in the heart of the French capital, near the Place Vedome and home to several high-end jewelry stores. Police arrested five suspects on September 26 and 27.

Among them is Aissa Bendjaber, the 66-year-old notorious robber who was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison for the 2016 robbery of the luxury Chopard store.

Nicknamed "The Borsalino man" because of his fedora, Bendjaber is also suspected of involvement in many other thefts with the total value of items reaching millions of euros.

The area around Place Vendome in Paris is a hotbed of robberies. In April, three men on motorbikes robbed a Bulgari store and made off with jewelry worth several million euros.

Piaget is a Swiss-based brand that produces high-end jewelry and watches that can cost tens of thousands of euros each. Piaget is a subsidiary of the Richemont Group, which also owns other luxury companies such as Cartier, Baume & Mercier, Chloe, and Van Cleef & Arpels.
