Mr. Trump is immune from prosecution for official presidential acts.

"We conclude that under the U.S. Constitution's separation of powers structure, the nature of presidential power requires that he have some immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts during his term of office. At least with respect to the exercise of his core constitutional powers, this immunity must be absolute," Chief Justice John Roberts announced.

"The president does not enjoy immunity for his unofficial actions, and not all presidential actions are official. The president is not above the law. But Congress may not criminalize the president's conduct in carrying out his executive branch responsibilities under the Constitution," Roberts explained.

Mr. Trump at a campaign event in Philadelphia (USA) on June 22.

Accordingly, the US Supreme Court will return the case file to the trial court to consider whether Mr. Trump's actions in this case qualify as formal or informal, according to Mr. Roberts.

Following the news, Mr. Trump welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity, calling it a major victory for the Constitution and American democracy. Many experts noted that the US Supreme Court's decision will make it unlikely that further proceedings on charges related to Mr. Trump's role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results will take place before November, according to CNN.

Mr Trump, 78, is the first former US president to be indicted and convicted of a crime. He currently faces federal charges in Florida and state charges in Georgia. Last month, he was convicted in a New York court of falsifying business records related to a financial deal arranged by a former associate with an adult film actress before the 2016 presidential election.
