Farmers in the Holy Mother area are ready with Israeli purple garlic plants |
Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, Thanh Mau residential group, Ward 7, Da Lat city is preparing for the new garlic crop to be planted in August. Mr. Duc said that growing garlic is a traditional occupation of Thanh Mau residents, many families have a tradition of growing garlic for 50 - 60 years, from the time of their grandparents. Mr. Duc shared: "Garlic is a traditional crop of Thanh Mau residents, we have continued the occupation of our grandparents and parents and every day we research and apply new techniques and new varieties for garlic."
One of the changes of the residents growing Thanh Mau garlic is the successful cultivation of Israeli purple garlic. Mr. Le The Hien, who has directly cultivated both varieties of garlic, traditional purple garlic and Israeli purple garlic, commented: “The purple garlic that my grandparents left behind has a purple skin, small, firm bulbs, high essential oil content, and a very fragrant smell. I have grown garlic for many years, and have never seen garlic grown in other localities that is similar to Da Lat garlic. But this Israeli purple garlic plant also has very similar features to Da Lat purple garlic. Israeli garlic also has a purple skin, firm bulbs, and high essential oil content. It also has an advantage over Da Lat garlic in that the bulbs are larger and have a better yield than traditional purple garlic.” According to Mr. Hien, Israeli purple garlic has similarities in color and flavor to Da Lat garlic. Therefore, when grown on garlic soil, Israeli purple garlic is quickly accepted by the market.
Like Dalat purple garlic, Israeli purple garlic must be grown outdoors and is not suitable for greenhouses. “Dalat purple garlic prefers dry, sunny weather. If planted in a lot of rain or no sun, the garlic will grow very slowly. But unlike other dry-loving plants, garlic cannot survive in greenhouses. I tried growing garlic in a greenhouse and the garlic cracked at the top. It is very interesting because Israeli purple garlic is similar to Dalat garlic, grown outdoors and can only be grown in the winter-spring crop. When the garlic is young, it can withstand rain. When the garlic is old and sunny, the skin of the garlic bulbs will have a beautiful color and the bulbs will yield high yields,” said Nguyen Van Duc. Garlic has few pests and diseases. It is mainly fertilized with enough organic and inorganic fertilizers. Monitor the garden closely during rainy seasons, as garlic is prone to leaf drop and yellow leaves.
"Da Lat garlic has been grown for many years, and the seeds are harvested in the previous season and left for the next season, so after a long time, the garlic has shown signs of growing smaller bulbs," said Mr. Vi Tien Dung, former Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ward 7. Therefore, according to Mr. Dung, farmers are very interested in introducing new varieties of garlic with high quality, similar to Da Lat purple garlic into cultivation. And, the project of bringing Israeli purple garlic to participate in the Thanh Mau garlic area implemented by the Da Lat City Agricultural Center has received enthusiastic response from farmers. Mr. Dung commented: "Israeli purple garlic has the same form and quality as traditional Da Lat garlic, and the yield is higher, so farmers really like to grow it. We are only worried about the lack of standard seeds, but if there are enough seeds, we will expand cultivation, improve the productivity and quality of the garlic area." Mr. Dung also said that garlic farmers in Ward 7 have established a Garlic Growing Cooperative, linking planting and product consumption with a local cooperative. Therefore, the garlic grown has been guaranteed products, farmers are very secure in cultivating.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quang - Director of Da Lat City Agricultural Center informed that the project of bringing Israeli purple garlic to Da Lat garlic area is part of the city's Sustainable Agriculture Program to limit the area of greenhouses in the area. Da Lat determined that to reduce the area of greenhouses, it is necessary to bring outdoor farming models to farmers so that they have more options. Mr. Quang assessed that the Israeli purple garlic variety, through the experimentation process on farmers' fields, has shown good vitality and high productivity, suitable for outdoor farming conditions. At the same time, the market also accepts Israeli purple garlic, which is an advantage for farmers to expand the area of Israeli garlic. Mr. Quang assessed that modern agriculture always preserves traditional varieties. However, to increase the value of income on land, it is also necessary to add "new winds", bringing high-quality agricultural varieties for farmers to cultivate and choose. And, the Israeli garlic plant, also with its characteristic purple color, has successfully joined the special garlic region on the plateau.
