Handing over Great Unity houses to the people
In 2006, Mr. Nguyen Van Manh (Ba Manh, residing in Vinh Loi commune, Chau Thanh district) established a charity house building group to build houses for poor households in and outside the commune. The houses were supported to be built solidly, with zinc frame structure, corrugated iron roof and walls, and toilets. The total construction cost was from 50 million VND or more, mobilized from benefactors.
The charity house building team attracted a large number of participants, mostly farmers, bricklayers, young and old. Each person had different circumstances, but they all did their best to help the poor. “In the team, there were both well-off and poor people. But when we saw people living in dilapidated houses, we couldn’t help but feel sad. From then on, we joined hands and hearts to help people have decent houses to live in, using that as a foundation to strive to escape poverty…” - Mr. Ba Manh shared.
Responding to the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Mr. Ba Manh and members of the Vinh Loi Commune Charity House Building Team, together with the local government, built Great Unity houses for poor and near-poor households and meritorious people in the commune. Through that, 5 new houses were built and 1 Great Unity house was repaired, with a total cost of 392 million VND. Of which, the Steering Committee for the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Chau Thanh District supported 330 million VND.
“With the motto “Joining hands for a warm home”, we not only mobilize resources from philanthropists, but also directly survey the site, develop construction plans, mobilize human resources, materials and directly construct so that each completed house meets the quality and living needs of each household. Each house is not only a place to return to, shelter from the sun and rain, but also a symbol of humanity, solidarity and sharing among people…” - Mr. Ba Manh expressed.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (near-poor household, born in 1970, residing in Thanh Phu hamlet, Binh Thanh commune) is happy to have a new house with an area of 70m2 , wooden frame structure, corrugated iron roof, and tiled floor. The total construction cost is over 70 million VND, of which An Giang Newspaper supported 60 million VND, the rest was contributed by the family. "Receiving this house, my family is very happy because we have a place to shelter from the rain and sun. The house has been my family's dream for many years. I promise to try to preserve the house well" - Mr. Dung excitedly said.
Over the years, the Charity House Building Team led by Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Tan Phu Commune, has brought joy and happiness to the poor, contributing to the implementation of social security policies in the locality. In 2019, Mr. Thanh opened a sawmill and mobilized local people to participate in building Charity Houses for the people. Although he is busy with farming, whenever people need help with housing, Mr. Thanh and his members are always willing.
Every year, the Charity House Building Team, led by Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, builds and repairs 25-30 houses. Each new house has an area of over 32m2 , with a budget of 35-70 million VND. In addition to building charity houses, Mr. Thanh also does a good job of operating ambulances, building bridges, making roads, etc. Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh shared: "Every time a house is completed, the team members are very happy, because they have supported the people to have a stable house, sheltering from the rain and sun."
From the simple people, with the spirit of “Mutual love and support”, the charity house building teams have been quietly spreading kindness throughout the countryside. The houses not only help the poor people settle down, but also serve as a support, giving them more strength to rise up in life…
