APEC 2027 - A "golden" opportunity for An Giang to reach international stature

The fact that Phu Quoc was chosen by the Central Government to host the APEC 2027 Summit Week is a great honor for An Giang in general and Phu Quoc in particular. Chairman of the Phu Quoc Special Zone People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that this event not only promotes the local image to the world, but is also a "golden" opportunity to attract investment, develop synchronous infrastructure and improve the quality of tourism, health , urban services... according to international standards, in order to create a new look for the locality.

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of An Giang Province Nguyen Thanh Nhan emphasized: “APEC 2027 is also an opportunity for An Giang in particular and Vietnam in general to demonstrate to international friends the strong development of its capacity to organize international-scale events as well as its deep connectivity and integration with the world. This event also helps the province expand international cooperation and build close relationships with APEC member economies .”

During his working trip to Phu Quoc on April 21, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed that APEC 2027 is an opportunity for Phu Quoc to break through and reach international level. The locality needs to make the most of its potential and seek support from the Central Government and the participation of the business community for rapid but sustainable development.

The workload for APEC 2027 preparation is enormous. With great determination, the province has mobilized all resources, racing against time to ensure the set progress. Since the beginning of 2025, the province has established a Steering Committee, a working group and sub-committees to serve APEC 2027. The overall plan for organizing the event has been completed. The province has established an interdisciplinary working group to remove obstacles and speed up the progress of projects. According to the Provincial People's Committee, the tasks of preparing infrastructure, logistics and organizational conditions are being implemented synchronously, meeting the requirements of the Central Government.

Pursuant to Decision 948/QD-TTg dated May 17, 2025 of the Prime Minister on assigning the task of preparing conditions and implementing a number of measures to quickly deploy projects serving the organization of APEC 2027 events, the Provincial People's Committee has developed a plan to deploy 25 projects, including 21 projects under Decision 948/QD-TTg and 4 projects implemented by the locality itself according to the normal process. The total implementation time is about 24 months. Currently, the work of site clearance, capital allocation and preparation of construction materials is being accelerated. At a recent meeting, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested that the projects must be completed before June 2027. Departments and branches must coordinate closely, assign tasks clearly, and complete each task.

Launching many key projects

In the last days of June, the construction atmosphere at the Phu Quoc International Airport upgrade and expansion project was urgent, despite the rainy weather. The sound of excavators and road rollers resounded, vehicles carrying construction materials came and went frequently. Sweat mixed with rain, wet shirts, groups of workers diligently dug the ground, drilled geology... because they clearly understood: Each day of completion is a step to shorten the journey for Phu Quoc to be ready for APEC 2027. Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - Commander of the contractor Coteccons implementing this project said: "The unit mobilized more than 300 workers with many machines and equipment to construct the project. The weather was not favorable, we urged the workers to work continuously to speed up the progress".

The Phu Quoc Airport upgrade and expansion project has a total capital of VND22,000 billion, expected to increase capacity to 18 million passengers/year, striving to be completed before the second quarter of 2027. Along with that, many other key projects such as DT.975 route, APEC boulevard, urban railway line, underground technical infrastructure system, smart operation center are also being promoted by the province.

In addition to the Phu Quoc Airport upgrade and expansion project, on June 19, the Provincial People's Committee granted investment approval decisions for two other major projects, namely Bai Dat Do Mixed Urban Area, with a total capital of VND64,000 billion, and Nui Ong Quan Eco-tourism Urban Area, with a total capital of VND5,550 billion, invested by Sun Group. These projects integrate high-class urban space, conference center, high-class eco-resort, directly serving APEC 2027 and developing long-term after the event. Mr. Tran Minh Son, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, committed: "Sun Group will mobilize the highest level of resources, focus highly to implement correctly, even ahead of schedule, ensuring the highest economic efficiency of the projects".

On June 28, during a field inspection of key projects serving APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung acknowledged that the province, along with ministries and branches, had synchronously deployed 15/15 tasks, of which 12 tasks had been completed. At the same time, he commended the efforts of the Provincial People's Committee, investors, contractors and related units in the preparation and construction of key projects.

Chairman of Phu Quoc Special Zone People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said: "Phu Quoc continuously directs relevant agencies to proactively review land funds, accelerate site clearance and resettlement to create favorable conditions for projects. At the same time, the locality coordinates with transportation units to ensure that construction materials are supplied promptly, without interruption due to geographical conditions."

The atmosphere of preparation for APEC 2027 is bustling and full of enthusiasm. Each project completed on schedule not only serves to “show off” to welcome international visitors, but also creates a foundation for sustainable development in the future. With thorough and urgent preparation, An Giang is ready to become an impressive destination in APEC 2027 - a place where Vietnamese identity and integration aspirations converge.

To date, the province has established 15 surveying working groups and completed legal procedures for 8/9 urgent projects. At the same time, it is actively promoting investment in 40 projects in the fields of environment, industry and eco-tourism, with a total proposed capital from the central budget of more than 9,000 billion VND.
