Korean experts develop new anti-cancer substance from mulberry root

The new anti-cancer agent was announced by KRIBB on October 23. This groundbreaking discovery promises to inhibit the expression of proteins that support the growth of solid tumors, which account for 70-80% of all cancer cases.

Research on anti-cancer substances extracted from mulberry roots by KRIBB expert group.

The research was conducted by Dr. Seong Nak-gyun of KRIBB in collaboration with Professor Lee Kyung's team at Dongguk University. The research results were published in this month's issue of the international academic journal "Journal of Advanced Research."

Solid tumors often have poorly formed blood vessels, leading to hypoxia (low oxygen) at the center. Unlike many normal cells, cancer cells can survive and grow in this hypoxic environment. The protein Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF-1α) plays a key role in helping cancer cells grow in such conditions. Normally, HIF-1α is degraded in oxygen-rich environments, but remains stable and active in hypoxic conditions, promoting cancer cell survival and growth.

The research team identified that the mulberry root extract "Moracin-O" can modulate the expression of HIF-1α. Taking advantage of this effect, they discovered a new anti-cancer agent called "MO-2097". When administered to cancerous organs derived from colon cancer patients, MO-2097 demonstrated significant anti-cancer effects. In addition, MO-2097 also exhibited low toxicity in zebrafish and mouse models, demonstrating its potential as a new therapeutic agent.

Dr. Seong expressed optimism about the discovery , describing "MO-2097 as a promising agent because it effectively acts on cancer cells while showing low toxicity to normal cells. It will contribute to the development of anti-cancer drugs targeting HIF-1α."
