On August 18, the company that operates the Ministop convenience store chain in Japan announced that it would temporarily stop selling processed food items at about 1,600 stores, after discovering that the expiration dates on some products had been changed.
Accordingly, the sale of onigiri rice balls and bento boxes has been stopped since August 9, while other processed dishes have been suspended since August 18.
According to internal investigations, some employees at the stores deliberately extended the shelf life by not labeling the food for 1 to 2 hours after it was prepared, or removing the old label and replacing it with a new fake label.
Violations were detected at 23 stores in Tokyo, Saitama, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka. No cases of food poisoning have been recorded so far./.
