Kyodo quoted Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru's pledge at the dialogue that the country will cooperate with Pacific island nations to build a peaceful , stable and prosperous future.

The Pacific region must be “free, open and stable” under a rules-based global order, he said.

“Unfortunately, in today’s era, unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion have gained momentum around the world and in the Indo-Pacific region,” said Minister Kihara.

Japan affirmed that it will continue to help Pacific nations build disaster response capacity and share knowledge in areas such as influence operations, outer space, cybersecurity defense and artificial intelligence.

Tokyo is also preparing to host the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders' Meeting next July.

The summit has been held every three years since 1997, with participation from Japan and 18 countries and territories, including Australia and New Zealand.
