Recently, a 1.2kg Matsuba snow crab was sold for a record price of 10 million yen (about 66,350 USD, equivalent to 1.62 billion VND) in the first auction of the crab fishing season at the fishing port of Hamasaka, Shinonsen, Hyogo Prefecture, Western Japan.
The winner of the November 6 auction was Ryosuke Uemura, owner of the Ryouriya Uemura restaurant in Chuo, Kobe. In addition to the 10 million yen crab, Mr. Uemura also bid 2.5 million yen for another crab in the November 7 auction.

Auction organizers said this was the first time a snow crab had been bid for more than 1 million yen on two consecutive days.
The price surpassed the previous record of 3.15 million yen set in the prefecture's port town of Shibayama, Kami, in 2022, according to the Tajima Fisheries Office of the Hyogo Prefectural Government.

Matsuba snow crabs are the name given to male snow crabs caught off the Sanin region that stretches along the southwestern coast of the main island of Honshu.
These crabs that meet certain criteria, such as weighing 1.2kg or more, are given the special name “Hamasaka-gani kiraboshi” (Hamasaka – Twinkling Star). The fishing season for this expensive crustacean, dubbed the “taste of winter,” begins on November 6 in the Sea of Japan stretching west of Toyama Prefecture.
