Laura Dahlmeier's manager has confirmed the tragic death of the Winter Olympic champion. She passed away at the age of 31.
Dahlmeier's body was found by a four-person rescue team, but access and recovery of her body was hampered by weather conditions on Mount Laila, Marca reported.
The Pakistan Alpine Club said the accident happened at noon on July 28, at an altitude of about 5,700m at Laila Peak. At that time, the German athlete was climbing with his teammates when they were suddenly caught in a rock slide.
Rescue teams and a helicopter were immediately dispatched to the area to conduct search operations. However, difficult terrain and weather conditions hampered the rescue efforts.
According to Reuters, during her critical moment, the German athlete left a message saying that no one was allowed to risk their lives to save her.
Laura Dahlmeier has many impressive achievements including 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal at the 2018 Olympics. Besides owning 7 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 5 bronze medals at the World Championships from 2015 to 2019.
Her passing has left many international sports fans heartbroken, with many sending their condolences to Dahlmeier's family.
FC Schalke 04 mourned on X: "Laura Dahlmeier, a great athlete and a warm-hearted person has left us."
