Raising awareness of dengue fever prevention

Dak Lak is entering the peak of the rainy season. The alternating rainy and sunny weather is a favorable condition for mosquitoes to grow, develop and transmit dengue fever.

The Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Department (Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital) is currently treating 21 patients with dengue fever, including 6 cases with warning signs. For example, patient Y Hon Hra (born in 2012, residing in Ea Nuol commune) was admitted to the hospital with a high fever for 2 days without improvement, accompanied by symptoms of digestive disorders, increased liver enzymes, and rapidly decreasing platelets...

Thanks to intensive treatment, after 9 days of fever, the patient's health has gradually stabilized. Another case is Ms. H'Duong Nie (born in 1982, residing in Ea Nuol commune), who felt tired and had a fever but subjectively thought she had a cold so she bought medicine to take herself.

After 5 consecutive days of high fever that did not subside, her illness became severe, and her family took her to the hospital with high fever, headache, pain in both eye sockets, fatigue, vomiting, abdominal pain, digestive disorders... Test results showed that Ms. H'Duong was positive for Dengue fever. Up to now, after 4 days of active treatment, her health has gradually improved.

Dengue fever patients are being treated at Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital.

Dr. Pham Thi Kim Que, Head of the Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Department (Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital) said that since the beginning of the year, the department has received 75 patients hospitalized due to dengue fever, the number of patients has increased sharply since the beginning of June. Currently, the hospital has prepared beds, patient rooms, equipment, medical supplies, etc. to be able to receive and treat dengue fever patients well. At the same time, all medical staff have been instructed and retrained on the dengue fever treatment regimen of the Ministry of Health.

According to Director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control Hoang Hai Phuc, dengue fever in the province is increasing, especially in the western localities of the province. Up to now, the whole province has recorded 1,316 cases of dengue fever, an increase of 30% compared to the same period in 2024. Dengue fever has shown signs of increasing since March, especially since the beginning of June until now. Currently, the whole province records an average of 10-20 cases per day, with some days recording 30 cases.

The recent increase in dengue fever is due to the rainy weather, which creates favorable conditions for mosquitoes to grow and develop. Moreover, people are still negligent and subjective, not strictly implementing regulations on disease prevention and control and environmental sanitation. In particular, many households still have the habit of using jars to store water, creating an environment for mosquito larvae to breed, causing mosquitoes to transmit dengue fever. For example, in Thanh Nhat ward, although many measures to prevent and control dengue fever have been proactively implemented since the beginning of the year, the ward still recorded 2 outbreaks with 18 cases of the disease. A typical case is the family of Mr. PVT (Ky hamlet, Thanh Nhat ward), 2/4 of whom have dengue fever. After contracting dengue fever, he realized that he was subjective when he only ensured hygiene in the house, but the chicken farm behind the house was not cleaned regularly, leading to the development of disease-causing mosquitoes.

Spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes in Thanh Nhat ward.

Head of Thanh Nhat Ward Health Station Le Dang Sac said that after the appearance of two dengue outbreaks, the unit sprayed chemicals twice, one week apart, to kill adult mosquitoes and prevent the spread. At the same time, a community communication team for dengue prevention and control was established in villages and hamlets, directly going to each household to propagate and instruct on how to prevent and control dengue...

According to the health sector, 2025 is predicted to be the time when the peak dengue epidemic cycle (3-year cycle) in the province will repeat. If there are no effective intervention measures, the risk of an epidemic occurring is very high.

In response to the development of dengue fever in the area, recently, the Department of Health has issued many directives and plans to health centers, commune and ward health stations to carry out disease prevention and control work right from the start, not allowing the disease to spread widely. The People's Committees of communes and wards have directed health stations to organize environmental sanitation campaigns, kill mosquito larvae (wrigglers) in the management area; develop plans to proactively spray chemicals in high-risk areas. In addition, the health sector has also strengthened propaganda on dengue fever prevention and control so that people can actively prevent the disease for themselves, their families and those around them.
