In March 2025, the Trump administration announced a 25% tariff on imported steel, and a 25% tariff on steel derivatives based on the value of the steel in the product. From June 4, the US government continued to increase tariffs on steel and derivatives to 50%.
Although South Korean electronics makers Samsung and LG currently manufacture some products such as washing machines in the United States, exports from South Korea, Mexico and other countries to the U.S. market still account for the majority of exports and are expected to be hit hard by the decision. The new products will be subject to tariffs starting June 23.
The Trump administration’s continued expansion of the definition of steel derivatives has led to an increase in the number of goods subject to tariffs, and the impact of Washington’s steel tariffs is far beyond initial expectations. When the steel derivatives tariffs were first announced in early March 2025, the number of products subject to tariffs, including both aluminum and steel, had reached 172. However, the US Department of Commerce has continued to update the list. Last month, the Commerce Department established a process to solicit comments on steel and aluminum derivatives. US steel companies have since asked the government to impose tariffs on a wide range of products, including consumer electronics.
It is not yet clear whether the US Commerce Department will impose tariffs on the products proposed by the businesses, which include boilers, air conditioners, industrial robots, agricultural machinery, boats and furniture.
