Modric has nightmare on Serie A debut

AC Milan opened the 2025/26 Serie A season with a surprising 1-2 home defeat to newly promoted Cremonese.

Although Modric set a record for the oldest debutant in Serie A, Milan's form needs to improve.

In the early morning of August 24, in the first round of Serie A, Federico Bonazzoli's spectacular volley became one of the decisive highlights of the match. The star of Cremonese - a team that was promoted to Serie A this season - had a brilliant performance in the 61st minute, sealing a 2-1 victory for the away team.

Earlier, Cremonese surprisingly opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Pavlovic equalized 1-1 for AC Milan at the end of the first half. This match also marked a historical milestone when Luka Modric became the oldest player to debut in Serie A at the age of 39 years and 11 months.

The former Real Madrid star surpassed the record held by Empoli goalkeeper Maurizio Pugliesi, who made his Serie A debut in 2016 at the age of 39 years and five months. However, Modric certainly wasn't happy about the record, as his side suffered a shock home defeat.

The Croatian veteran started, but could not save the home team. He was even substituted in the 74th minute. This defeat of Milan put coach Massimiliano Allegri under a lot of pressure.

Although AC Milan kicked off the season with a 2-0 win over Bari in the Coppa Italia last week, a forgettable start to the 2025/26 Serie A campaign means coach Max Allegri and his players will have a lot of work to do if they want to take the red-and-black striped club to a European Cup spot.
