2024 is an important year for Mexico: for the first time in the country's history, two women are running for President, reflecting the unprecedented achievements of women in public and political spheres.

On June 2, tens of millions of people in Mexico are preparing to make history - voting to elect the first female President of this Latin American country.

The two leading female candidates in the race are Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo of the left-wing Morena party and her right-wing rival, Ms. Xochitl Gálvez Ruiz. Both are currently competing for the top spot in the polls, far ahead of third-place candidate Jorge Álvarez Maynez. For example, a survey conducted by Mitofsky for El Economista magazine puts Ms. Sheinbaum at 56%, Ms. Galvez at 32.2% and Mr. Maynez at 11.8%.

According to France24 , this year's Mexican presidential election marks a political turning point, a significant change for women's rights in Mexico, a country where femicide is a major issue.

Equal Times cites official figures showing that in Mexico there are 11 murders of women every day, more than 100,000 people have disappeared, including 24,600 women since 2006. According to authorities, on average, nearly 10 women are murdered every day in Mexico (3,427 in 2021).

In Mexico, presidents can only serve one six-year term. That means Mexico's 58th President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will have to step down next month.

Mexico is scheduled to hold its largest general election in history on June 2 to elect a president, 500 members of the lower house of Congress and 128 members of the Senate. More than 170,000 ballot boxes will be deployed nationwide.
