Mexico launches police squad using supercars to fight crime

On May 20, the government of San Luis Potosi state, Central Mexico, launched a rapid response traffic police squad specializing in using supercars to patrol and pursue dangerous criminal gangs.

This is the first police squad using supercars in this Latin American country.

The San Luis Potosi state government said the squad includes 200 of the most elite members selected from the local police force, using 50 new supercars such as Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro or Dodge Challenger.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Ricardo Gallardo Cardona, Governor of San Luis Potosi state, affirmed that in addition to patrolling and ensuring security on highways, the squad will support the National Guard in pursuing criminal gangs currently rampant in many areas of the state, especially drug and human trafficking gangs.

The squad is divided into two shifts that operate 24/7. They are authorized to stop and pursue any suspicious vehicles at any time of the day.

Most of the newly equipped supercars are capable of accelerating from 0-100km in under 5 seconds, which means they can chase and stop most common means of transport.

With thousands of kilometers of highways running through it, San Luis Potosi is located on Mexico’s eastern artery. It also borders Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon, two states that border the United States and are notorious for being home to many drug and human trafficking gangs.

In early March 2023, a Mexican drug cartel apologized for the shooting deaths of its American kidnappers, citing a “lack of discipline” among some of its members.

The Gulf Cartel, which is accused of being responsible for the incident, has apologized to the victim's family and announced that it will hand over the members involved to the authorities.
