Bringing light to the poor

Thanks to the joint efforts of all levels, sectors and the community, many elderly and poor people with eye diseases have had their vision restored. The surgeries not only bring physical light, but also give them more motivation to overcome difficulties and move steadily towards a brighter life.

The campaign "Bright eyes for the elderly" has been implemented by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly since 2012. To implement this program, the Provincial Association of the Elderly has developed a plan to coordinate with departments, branches, sectors and social organizations to implement. At the same time, it guides the Association of the Elderly at all levels to survey and count the number of elderly people with eye diseases, thereby building a program suitable to the conditions of each locality. According to the Provincial Association of the Elderly, the program has many activities, each locality coordinates with the groundswells health sector to survey and count elderly people with eye diseases, the association mobilizes funds to support eye examination and surgery. Thanks to its synchronous and widespread implementation, the program has received active support from departments, branches, organizations and the whole society.

The free eye screening and surgery consultation sessions for the poor in the province organized by the Kien Giang Association for the Support of Poor Patients in collaboration with the Nhan Ai doctors' team - Ho Chi Minh City Association for the Support of Poor Patients have had many patients receive screening, consultation and eye surgery. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, a resident of Rach Gia ward, shared: "My eyes are blurry, causing difficulties in moving around and doing daily activities. After the screening examination, the doctor recommended me to have eye surgery. I hope that after the surgery, my eyes will be clearer."

Eye surgeons for patients

Not only Mrs. Tham, many eye patients in the province also expressed their joy when they received free eye examination, consultation and surgery from doctors. Cases with eye diseases that require specialized examination and treatment or surgery are all enthusiastically consulted by the medical team and doctors of Nhan Ai Medical Group, and are listed for free treatment. In addition, the Kien Giang Association for the Support of Poor Patients mobilized benefactors to support patients with gifts during the examination and surgical process. This helps patients better understand how to care for and protect their eyesight. "My eyes have been blurred for several years, many people advised me to have surgery, but the cost of surgery and travel is expensive, so I have not been able to have eye surgery. Now that the team of doctors has come to perform free eye surgery, I am very happy," said Mrs. Huynh Thi Duc, a resident of Long Thanh Commune.

The free eye surgery program to bring light to poor patients has been carried out by the Kien Giang Association for the Support of Poor Patients since 2003. All eye surgeries, whether inside or outside the province, are carried out carefully, from making a list, organizing patient transportation, and guiding patients, all are carried out methodically, following the correct procedures and with dedication. After the screening examination, patients assigned to surgery will have their blood tested...

Having bright eyes again is the dream of many elderly people with eye diseases, especially the poor who have to save every penny to take care of their lives. Therefore, the free eye surgery program not only helps the poor and elderly regain their sight, but also gives them hope to walk steadily in life.

The free eye surgery program to bring light to poor patients has been carried out by the Kien Giang Association for the Support of Poor Patients for over 20 years. The Association has performed surgery for 52,000 people, including about 39,000 people in the province, 8,000 people in other provinces, 5,000 people from Cambodia... with a total cost of over 40 billion VND.
