With support from the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, people in Na Phat hamlet (old Thanh Son) have opened a homestay to welcome tourists to develop the economy .
Identifying ethnic policies and ethnic work as a lever for socio-economic development in ethnic minority areas, Mai Chau commune has mobilized all resources to invest in infrastructure and support livelihoods for ethnic minorities and mountainous areas.
Thanh Son (old) is a particularly difficult area with 60% of Thai people and over 30% of Muong people living there. However, this is also a high mountainous area with majestic natural landscapes, fresh and cool climate and unique indigenous culture. Identifying that there is a lot of potential for developing community tourism , since 2018, the commune has mobilized a number of households in the area to build homestays to welcome tourists . To support households, the commune has used capital from the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas in coordination with the Mai Chau District Vocational Training Center (old) to open a vocational training class on community tourism management skills in the commune, helping households access preferential credit sources to open homestays. The 3-month training class with practical knowledge such as reception, service, brand promotion, and organizing experiential activities has attracted more than 30 students.
From that initial support, community tourism is opening up opportunities to change the lives of many ethnic minority households in Thanh Son. Some businesses have linked up with local households to develop community tourism. In addition, there are 3 community tourism spots in the area, attracting an average of 1.5 - 1.7 thousand tourists each year, including foreign tourists.
Thai ethnic people (old Na Phon) continue to preserve brocade weaving to develop community tourism in the locality.
Building livelihood models to help ethnic minorities stabilize their lives is also one of the important tasks that the Party Committee and the government are interested in. Comrade Ha Trung Thao, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mai Chau commune, said: The national target program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas with 10 projects and 36 sub-projects is being implemented in the area with the goal of comprehensively developing ethnic minority areas. Mobilizing capital from the program, the commune focuses on supporting production development for people, in which some models have been effective such as the model of supporting hybrid cows for households with special difficulties and supporting to improve efficiency, expanding the area of some key crops such as hybrid corn, peanuts and strong plants such as purple garlic, taro, sweet potatoes... Currently, products such as Thai Mai Chau ethnic brocade weaving, Thanh Son purple garlic, and Thung Khe sticky corn have been invested in building collective brands to increase value and competitiveness in the market. In addition, the commune promotes investment attraction activities, especially large projects on resort tourism to promote the potential and advantages of the locality and create jobs for local workers.
Recently, the commune has invested in the Noong Luong Retreat project - a high-tech agricultural area combined with tourism. The project has a total area of over 118 hectares, with an investment capital of 359 billion VND. Of which, 50% of the area serves high-tech agriculture, including clean vegetables, fruits, seedlings and medicinal herbs. Within the project, there are high-class resorts with modern investment.
In parallel with building effective economic models, Mai Chau is investing in infrastructure development for ethnic minority and mountainous areas. With resources from three national target programs: new rural construction, sustainable poverty reduction and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, Mai Chau has invested in dozens of infrastructure projects such as electricity, roads, schools and stations for villages and hamlets in extremely difficult areas. 2025 is the final year of implementing three national target programs for the period 2021 - 2025 on new rural construction, sustainable poverty reduction and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. This is identified as the "sprint" time to complete the disbursement of investment capital, remove procedural difficulties to ensure project progress. Currently, the commune continues to direct the progress of projects that have started construction and completed investment procedures. In addition, the commune closely coordinates with departments and branches that are the standing agencies of the three programs to continue to remove procedural difficulties for projects in the program.
In the new development space with geographical advantages and cultural identity, the orientation of the commune is to develop the potential of each region in the direction of "green economy" - developing community tourism, services and high-quality agriculture. In particular, the central area of the commune continues to exploit the strengths of community tourism, the highland areas such as Thanh Son (old) aim to develop eco-tourism, resorts, agriculture and medicinal plants under the forest canopy. With the right direction and synchronous investment, Mai Chau has many opportunities to transform itself into a bright spot in socio-economic development associated with preserving identity and improving the lives of ethnic minorities.
