SIM swapping scam disables fingerprints, causing victims to lose all their money

A 20-year-old hacker in the US has just been sentenced to 10 years in prison for participating in the Scattered Spider group, using sophisticated SIM swapping tricks to steal millions of dollars.

According to TechSpot, the SIM swapping trick that has just been exposed is causing confusion among many people.

Noah Michael Urban, 20, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $13 million in restitution.

Urban and the Scattered Spider group stole at least $800,000 from five victims.

They impersonate IT staff to trick users into providing login information and OTP.

The group also sends fake warning messages, leading victims to phishing websites.

Once the SIM is successfully swapped, they bypass fingerprint and facial authentication and steal money.

The FBI estimates that Scattered Spider took between $9.5 million and $25 million from more than 30 victims.

The heavy sentence is seen as a warning about the dangers of high-tech crime.
