The flooding began when a dam overflowed after heavy rains, forcing thousands to evacuate. The disaster has affected other facilities in the capital Maiduguri, including the post office and hospital, prompting local authorities to order residents to leave the worst-affected areas.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the government and people of Borno State, especially those families who have lost their livelihoods due to the disaster. The government has also pledged to provide necessary humanitarian assistance.

Last month, floods in northeastern Nigeria killed at least 49 people, while floods in 2022 killed more than 600. Borno state, the birthplace of the Boko Haram insurgency, has been battling a 15-year conflict that has left many dead and displaced.
