In just a short time, Phu Quy special zone has changed rapidly, with a system of hotels, restaurants, and homestays springing up like mushrooms with all types from budget to high-end. From just a few motels in 2019, up to now, the whole special zone has 19 hotels/393 rooms, 41 villas and motels/364 rooms, along with more than 100 homestays and inns serving guests. In addition, there are more than 30 dining establishments and specialty stores, gradually forming a chain of diverse and convenient services.

On average, Phu Quy special zone welcomes about 1,000 visitors every day, especially during the April 30 and May 1 holidays, or Tet, the number of visitors will double, sometimes triple. At those times, accommodation facilities, restaurants, eateries, and cafes also increase their capacity to serve a large number of visitors at the same time. When there are many visitors, everyone is happy, but if the service is not attentive, it will cause the opposite reaction. In addition, the quality of service and food is not commensurate with the amount of money tourists spend, there will be more or less reviews on social platforms, famous foreign travel sites and will affect the image of a peaceful, hospitable pearl island that many people are trying to build.

According to the leader of Phu Quy special economic zone, the biggest pressure on the island at present is domestic water and environmental sanitation. As tourism develops, it also poses significant environmental challenges, especially the huge increase in waste. Of which, plastic waste accounts for the majority, potentially polluting the marine environment, seriously affecting the ecosystem and natural landscape - one of the key factors that every special economic zone is concerned about. Although the special economic zone has the Da Loc Phu Quy Waste Treatment and Recycling Plant with a capacity of 70 tons of waste per day, with the increasing number of tourists and the amount of waste generated, this plant has become overloaded, requiring more drastic solutions.
Mr. Nguyen Tung - a resident of Phu Quy special zone said that domestic water on the island depends on rainwater reservoirs and well water. Underground water is only exploited according to "the right level" to avoid landslides. Meanwhile, hotels and homestays are springing up to store water, so many households are facing water shortages at certain times, especially at night. Therefore, the authorities here regularly propagate to people to protect the environment and use water economically. However, the authorities need to have a clear plan, otherwise the water shortage will become more and more serious.

With the determination to build the image of a "pearl island" without plastic waste, the provincial leaders as well as the Phu Quy special zone government have implemented many specific actions to eliminate plastic waste right at the gateway. It is known that since March 2024, Phu Quy has launched an anti-plastic waste movement, encouraging tourists not to bring plastic waste to the island. At the same time, mobilize units, transport businesses, tourism businesses and tourists to join hands and actively implement not bringing plastic waste to the island. 100% of canoes taking tourists to Hon Tranh island and other isolated islands will not use plastic bottles, plastic products, single-use nylon bags... Currently, Phu Quy is continuing to implement good and effective models in the collection and transportation of solid waste. The most interesting thing is that there are young people who come to visit, fall in love with the pristine beauty of Phu Quy, quickly call for and form groups with the same idea to join hands to collect coastal waste. Thanks to that, places such as Lang Co embankment, Doc Phuot, Bai Nho, Bai Phu... are gradually cleaned up thanks to this campaign.
Chairman of Phu Quy Special Zone People's Committee - Le Hong Loi once shared: "Phu Quy identifies tourism development as a comprehensive economic sector, imbued with cultural identity, must develop sustainably, greenly and in depth. To do so, we will prioritize upgrading infrastructure, methodical planning, applying digital transformation and calling for strong investment in services serving tourists". In order for Phu Quy tourism to retain its own inherent identity, not to be mixed with other special zones, the "pearl island" needs to have its own path, not to develop massively, not to chase after quantity, so that every time Phu Quy is mentioned, tourists will always remember the wildness, peace, gentleness and hospitality.
