Where are eels common and in what season?
In Vietnam, eels are mainly found in the Central and Southwestern provinces, where there is a dense river system and a natural environment suitable for the growth of this fish species. The Central region is a prominent area for eels, especially in provinces such as the former Quang Ngai, the former Binh Dinh, the former Quang Nam , and Ha Tinh.
Rivers such as Tra Khuc and coastal areas of Binh Dinh (now Khanh Hoa), Quang Nam (now Da Nang ) have many eels living. Here, eels are exploited mainly from rivers, ponds and brackish water near the sea. Eels grow quickly and are very suitable for the aquatic conditions in this area.

The Southwest is also one of the places with abundant eels, with provinces such as Can Tho, An Giang, Dong Thap. Here, eels live mainly in the canals and large rivers of the Mekong Delta. Regions such as Long Xuyen (An Giang), Can Tho are famous for specialty eel breeds, often exploited to serve domestic consumption and export needs.
The main breeding season for this eel is in the summer, from May to September every year, when the water temperature is stable and there are many food sources. This is also the time when the eels lay eggs, and therefore, the catch increases during this season. The months of June to September are the main harvest season for eels, when the fish are mature and have the best meat quality.
Fishermen often use fishing nets or fish traps to catch eels in rivers, lakes or canals. In some places, people also use bamboo poles and rolling nets to harvest fish. After being caught on shore, the fish will be transported to wholesale markets or businesses, sold fresh to people. In the North or big cities, it is more difficult to find eels at markets or supermarkets. Buyers mainly have to look for specialized seafood establishments or markets or large supermarkets and only have them at certain times of the year.

According to Khanh Hoa Newspaper , the selling price of commercial eels fluctuates depending on the weight and quality of the fish. Grade 1 fish (about 3-6 kg/fish) usually costs from 500,000 to 600,000 VND/kg, while grade 2 fish costs from 370,000 to 500,000 VND/kg. With a weight of 2 to 7 kg/fish, the selling price can be from 1 million to 4 million VND/fish, bringing high profits to farmers.
