According to history books, in 248, Trieu Thi Trinh (aka Ba Trieu) and her brother Trieu Quoc Dat, a powerful district magistrate in the region, gathered righteous men, chose Nua mountain as a base to practice martial arts, raise an army, and fight off the invading Eastern Wu army.
The Ba Trieu uprising later failed, the female general had to commit suicide at Tung mountain (Trieu Loc commune, Hau Loc district today) on February 22, Mau Thin year 248.
Although Lady Trieu's uprising against the invading Eastern Wu army failed, it created a bright milestone in history, demonstrating our nation's indomitable spirit against foreign invaders.
To commemorate the merits of Ba Trieu, the people of Trieu Loc commune built a temple and her tomb on the top of Tung mountain, built a temple to worship Ba Trieu on Gai mountain, and built a large communal house in the middle of Phu Dien village.
During the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties, temples were renovated, royal decrees were issued, and ceremonies were regulated with national rituals.
Every year, on the anniversary of the death of the Queen (February 22nd of the lunar calendar), local people and tourists come to offer incense at the Ba Trieu Temple, other historical sites and organize many rituals, cultural and sports activities such as carrying the Lady's palanquin and performing the Congregation at the Lady's Temple.
Among them, the palanquin procession (also known as the ball procession) is the most unique, important and sacred ritual, attracting a large number of people and tourists to participate. What makes the palanquin procession unique is the phenomenon of "flying palanquin".
Over 17 centuries old, Ba Trieu Temple Festival is one of the oldest, most widespread and most valuable festivals in Thanh Hoa.
In 2014, the Ba Trieu Temple historical architectural and artistic relic was recognized as a special national relic.
