Scenic village 'reunited' after 121 years

Thai Duong sea village was formed more than 500 years ago, but since the storm in the year of Giap Thin (1904), Thuan An seaport has opened, dividing the village into two. The Hai Duong commune (old) side includes two villages Thai Duong Thuong and Thai Duong Ha. On the other side of the seaport is Thai Duong Ha Giap village.

According to the village elders, the name Thai Duong village came from the legend of the sacred Thai Duong lady who was respected and worshiped by the people.

Legend has it that, long ago in the village there was a man named Danh Bo, honest, but had no parents, no home, was dirt poor, and made a living by fishing every day.

One day, there was a strong wind and heavy rain, the sea was rough, the waves were howling loudly, the sky was pitch black, but because there was nothing left to eat at home, Danh Bo took a risk and went out to sea to cast a net. After a whole day of strong winds and waves at sea but not catching any fish, Danh Bo sadly returned to shore. Seeing a rock, he laid down and fell into a deep sleep.

In his dream, Danh Bo saw a beautiful goddess with noble appearance approaching him and saying: "I am Thai Duong phu nhan, you are a mortal, how dare you rely on me?".

Danh Bo woke up in fear, hurriedly prayed before the stone and said: "I am a country bumpkin and ignorant, please forgive me. If you help me have good luck in my career, I will remember that merit in my heart."

Indeed, from then on, Danh Bo's nets filled with fish and shrimp on every trip he went out to sea. Moved by the goddess's miracle, Danh Bo built a thatched temple to worship the stone slab.

The villagers were surprised and asked about the incident, so they pooled their money to build a spacious temple and brought the stone back to worship. From then on, the goddess helped the villagers a lot, they almost never returned empty-handed from sea, and their boats no longer encountered storms.

Before setting sail, villagers go to the temple of the goddess Thai Duong to pray for her protection. Since then, this coastal fishing village has also taken the name of the goddess Thai Duong.

Thai Duong village was founded by the Vo, Nguyen, and Truong families, and is associated with the famous historical site of Tran Hai Thanh under the Nguyen Dynasty, which was voted by King Thieu Tri as the 10th most beautiful scene out of 20 beautiful scenes in Than Kinh (Than Kinh Nhi Thap Canh). That is "De Thap Canh Thuan Hai Quy Pham", meaning the beautiful scene of boats returning to Thuan An estuary.

The sea gate that King Thieu Tri voted as the 10th ancient scenic spot, according to the book Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu , is called Eo Gate, opened in the year Giap Than (1404) of the Ho Dynasty. This place in history books is also known by many different names such as Yeu Hai Mon, Noan Hai Mon and Nhuyen Hai Mon, which existed for 500 years (1404 - 1904), but no longer exists.

When 3 villages "reunite"

As mentioned, after the storm in the year of Giap Thin (1904), the newly opened seaport divided Thai Duong village into two villages, Thai Duong Thuong and Thai Duong Ha, located south of the new seaport in Hai Duong commune, old Huong Tra town. Thai Duong Ha Giap village is located north of Thuan An seaport.

In 2022, the coastal road project through Thua Thien - Hue province and the overpass over Thuan An estuary will start construction.

The project has a total investment of nearly 3,500 billion VND, of which phase 1 is 2,400 billion VND, investing more than 7.7 km, including the road from Tam Giang bridge (old Hai Duong commune) to the bridge across Thuan An estuary, ending at the intersection of National Highway 49A to National Highway 49B in Thuan An town (old). Of which, the bridge across Thuan An estuary alone is 2.3 km long, the cross-section of the route is 26 m, the width of the bridge is 20 m.

After 3 years of construction, the road and overpass across Thuan An estuary are now nearing completion, connecting the two banks of the estuary, creating conditions for the people of the old Thai Duong village to "reunite" and no longer be separated.

On July 1, 2025, another important historical event occurred: implementing the policy of merging administrative units of wards and communes nationwide, Thuan An Ward was newly established on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of Hai Duong Commune and Thuan An Ward.

Thus, the people of the 3 Thai Duong villages after exactly 121 years of separation have returned to the same ward and will soon be connected by the Thuan An overpass.

Mr. Vo Xe (68 years old, living in Thai Duong Thuong village) happily said: "Since the bridge construction started, every day I have been looking forward to the completion of the bridge so that the people of Thai Duong village will no longer be separated. Now, the people's wish of more than a hundred years is about to come true. What could be happier than when the village is reunited, connecting the happy shores?"

Thai Duong village is now known not only for Thuan An beach, a masterpiece of nature that attracts many tourists.

Thai Duong is also a destination associated with a new wonder, the longest sea-crossing bridge in the Central region, marking a historical milestone in the development journey of Hue City in the new era.
