With 2 weeks left until the Mid-Autumn Festival, star lantern making facilities in Bao Dap village (Nam Truc district, Nam Dinh ) are busy completing orders. The price of star lanterns this year has decreased slightly compared to last year.
The craft of making star lanterns in Bao Dap village has existed for a long time and has been passed down from generation to generation.
The Bao Dap star lantern is completely handmade. The materials include bamboo, small steel wire, glue, colored paper, colored nylon (such as blue, yellow, red...) and jute bones for the handle.
Glue is made from sticky rice flour, which is both strong and safe for children.
Bao Dap star lanterns come in many sizes, the large ones are up to 1m in diameter, the medium ones are 50cm, the small ones are 30cm, and there are even large ones made to order.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen (Bao Dap village) shared: “Making star lanterns is busiest from the 5th to the 8th lunar month. During the 7th lunar month, everyone from old to young participates in making lanterns, the atmosphere is very bustling”.
The children enthusiastically helped adults make star lanterns.
Households making star lanterns in Bao Dap village said that this year the number of lanterns made is greater, but the selling price is slightly lower than last year, as all the products made are sold out.
Medium-sized star lanterns are purchased by traders at prices ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 VND/piece; large-sized lanterns from 7,000 to 8,000 VND/piece; small-sized lanterns from 4,000 to 5,000 VND/piece depending on the time.
Although there are many competitive products on the market, Bao Dap village's star lanterns are still a meaningful gift for children during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Star lanterns associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival have become a custom, practice and cultural feature of Vietnam.
