How to track the first and strongest meteor shower of 2024?

VTC NewsVTC News02/01/2024

The Quadrantid meteor shower - the strongest meteor shower and the first meteor event of 2024 - takes place between December 28, 2023 and January 12, 2024 and peaks on the night of January 3 and the morning of January 4, 2024 (international time, equivalent to the evening of January 4, Vietnam time).

The Quadrantid meteor shower has a narrow peak in the North-Northeast and can be best observed in the Northern Hemisphere. According to experts, to observe the meteor shower, you should choose a location with a wide and clear view; limit artificial light, and go to a place far away from the city.

The observer should let his eyes get used to the darkness for about 15-20 minutes, then lie back and observe with the naked eye.

The Quadrantid meteor shower originates from asteroid 2003 EH1, which is believed to be an inactive or extinct comet. However, the asteroid remains outside Earth's orbit, and debris ejected from the asteroid intersects Earth's orbit, creating the observable peak of the Quadrantids.

According to the American Meteor Society, about 25 meteors per hour will be visible in dark skies during the Quadrantids' peak. A bright moon in the sky will make the meteors appear fainter, although the Quadrantids produce bright fireballs that can cut through any light pollution.

Another meteor event observed in Australia.
