Fanpage impersonating Lan Rung resort causes a person in Ho Chi Minh City to "fall into the trap" of fraud

Reporting to Tuoi Tre Online , Ms. LCBP (46 years old, residing in Trung My Tay ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that she had just been scammed out of all the money in her bank account after booking a resort room through social networks.

Fake "blue tick" fanpage of luxury resort to scam

According to Ms. P., on June 27, while surfing Facebook, she saw the page "Lan Rung Beach Resort" advertising many summer combo deals. Since her two children were on summer vacation, she planned to travel and clicked on this Facebook page to learn more.

Ms. P. said that the above Fanpage had a "blue tick", many posts and interactions so she thought it was real, so when she received a message from the fanpage, she did not doubt it at all.

Through the fanpage, a person sent a message to Ms. P: "Deluxe room for 1,350,000 VND/night/person..., large double bed, area 55m2 , sea view, 3 meals included and 2-way shuttle service".

Ms. P. booked a room for 3 people from July 2 to July 4 and was quoted 8.1 million VND. After choosing a room based on the pictures sent by the fanpage, Ms. P. confirmed the booking and was instructed to deposit 50%, equivalent to 3.8 million VND by transfer to account 9738899xx opened at VPBank .

However, the "resort staff" used the excuse that Ms. P. did not write the booking code in the transfer content, which was wrong (previously, she did not ask for the booking code), and asked Ms. P. to transfer the money again.

"They told me to transfer 3.8 million VND again with the content of the booking code to be valid, and immediately after receiving the money, they would refund me the 3.8 million that had been transferred incorrectly before. Then they sent me a Facebook message with the name "Nguyen Duc Truong" and introduced themselves as accountants who would process the refund for me.

Next, I was added as a friend by "Nguyen Duc Truong". This person sent me a video clip instructing me on the steps to operate on my bank account and told me to follow them to get a refund. But when I followed the instructions and entered the code into the link, all 27 million VND in my account was gone.

Not stopping there, this person also said that I did the wrong operation, so I had to borrow the same amount from someone else and transfer it back to get the previous amount back. At this point, I knew I was scammed. When I did not agree to continue transferring money, the instructional video was also removed," Ms. P. said indignantly.

After the incident, Ms. P. went to the police station to report and was instructed to complete additional procedures to collect more evidence to serve the verification.

Why do many tourists cheat to get deposit money from resorts and hotels?

On July 4, Mr. Vo Huynh Ngoan - business manager of Lan Rung resort (Phuoc Hai commune, Ho Chi Minh City) said that the situation of this resort being impersonated and defrauded of tourists' deposits has been happening for more than a year. "There are many tourists who have fallen into the scam traps of fanpages and Facebook pages impersonating "Lan Rung resort", these pages have blue ticks", Mr. Ngoan informed.

Phuoc Hai Commune, Ho Chi Minh City is the new name of Phuoc Hoi Commune, Long Dat District, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province before.

According to him, there are currently 4-5 Facebook pages named "Lan Rung Resort", which have blue ticks but are actually impersonations used to scam people.

In the past, this resort has received information from more than 100 tourists who fell into the trap of fraud due to impersonation and deposit transfer. Only a few people avoided the trap when they were about to transfer money to the scammer and called the resort to verify. These fake fanpages continuously run advertisements.

"But there are also cases where the scammer tells the tourist that they transferred the deposit incorrectly, so they ask them to transfer the deposit back correctly and the resort will transfer the money back. And so they transfer the deposit many times in the hope of getting their deposit back. Some people were scammed out of more than 10 million VND because they transferred the deposit many times," said Mr. Ngoan.

According to research, the scam tricks of the fanpages and Facebook pages impersonating Lan Rung resort are very sophisticated, with a whole group of people playing the roles of chief accountants to sales staff "as if it were real".

The story of impersonating luxury resorts and hotels to scam people out of money has been happening for many years. But why are people still being scammed?

That is because of the psychology of wanting cheap prices and the scammers hit the psychology of tourists. It is known that the room price offered by the scammers is only half of the listed price of the resort.

In addition, scammers also offer convenient combo packages such as shuttle service, meals, and massage.

"Fake fanpages even offer combo packages that our resort does not have," Mr. Vo Huynh Ngoan shared.

Last May, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province (old) met with relevant agencies to discuss solutions to prevent fraud by impersonating fanpages and websites of accommodation establishments in the area.

Accordingly, the department requested provincial tourism associations to send documents to provincial, municipal and national tourism associations to warn about the above phenomenon.

At the same time, create a list of reputable, star-rated tourist accommodation establishments (with links, phone numbers, emails, etc.) to post on the website of the department and association as well as guide tourists to correctly recognize the behavior and tricks that show signs of fraud in fake fanpages, websites, etc.

Mr. Vo Huynh Ngoan said that to prevent the impersonation of Lan Rung resort to scam, the resort has stopped consulting via Facebook messages. At the same time, visitors can call the resort's landline or Zalo at 02543.67.99.39 for consultation.

"We are willing to call zalo with pictures so that tourists can know the room, to confirm for tourists," said Mr. Ngoan.
