Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that US President Donald Trump has permanently changed the relationship between the two countries and there is no possibility of 'return'.
The Guardian reported on March 28 that in an interview with reporters, Mr. Carney said: “The old relationship that we had with the United States based on deep economic integration, close security and military cooperation is over.” The Canadian Prime Minister stated that regardless of any future trade agreement, the relationship between the two countries “will not be able to return.”
The Canadian Prime Minister's statement was made on March 27, after President Trump announced on March 26 that he would impose a 25% tax on cars and auto parts, a move that is expected to escalate trade tensions from the White House's tariff policies. The US last year imported cars worth $475 billion, mainly from Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany. European companies alone sold more than 750,000 cars to the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Carney called Trump's tariffs "absurd," saying they violate existing trade agreements between the two countries. Carney added that he would talk to local leaders and businesses to discuss appropriate responses and would likely take retaliatory measures against Washington next week.
European countries have also criticized Mr Trump’s decision to impose tariffs. French President Emmanuel Macron said he had told his US counterpart that the tariffs were not a good idea, as they disrupt value chains, create inflation and threaten jobs. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Mr Trump’s decision was a mistake and that Washington had chosen a path in which no one ultimately wins.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Mr Trump's move as bad for business and worse for consumers. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the tariffs were worrying and that his government would be "pragmatic and clear-headed" in its response.
Writing on the social network Truth Social on March 27, US President Donald Trump warned that if the European Union (EU) cooperates with Canada to harm the US economy, Washington will impose much larger tariffs than currently planned for both sides. The US leader said this is to protect “the best friend that Canada and the EU have ever had.”
