Tourists banned from working in Indonesia

Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said tourists are banned from working in Indonesia to protect local businesses and the workforce. Any violation of the regulation could result in immediate deportation. Repeat offenders will be banned from entering Indonesia for a certain period of time, Sandiaga said, calling on foreign tourists to respect local customs and abide by Indonesian laws.

Last year, Indonesia deported 300 foreign tourists for misusing or overstaying their visas. Now, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is aiming to attract 14 million international visitors this year.

Bali is said to be one of the places where many foreigners use tourist visas to work illegally. Many people initially come to Bali for tourism purposes but some end up opening illegal businesses. This phenomenon has increased in relation to some recent Indonesian visa policies such as Visa on Arrival (VoA) and Second Home Visa policy.

The second home visa program is aimed at attracting wealthy foreigners, requiring applicants to show proof of financial resources and deposit an additional 2 billion rupiah in a bank owned by the Indonesian government . Indonesian officials say the second home visa program is aimed at attracting wealthy tourists who can afford to live in Indonesia and contribute to the economy by spending rather than working. Bali authorities have also set up a task force made up of local officials and immigration officials to monitor the activities of foreigners living there.
