Disappointed when not being able to watch the MU - Arsenal match on VieON, cable channel

EPL and K+ channels were suddenly cut off from many platforms, causing difficulties for domestic audiences.

Late on August 17, the "Super Sunday" match between Manchester United and Arsenal took place in the first round of the 2025-2026 Premier League season. In Vietnam, K+ is still the copyright owner of the tournament.

Right before the start of the new season, a series of OTT broadcasting platforms announced that they would stop providing channel packages from K+. The sudden change left viewers disappointed as they had no time to prepare before the important match took place.

Mr. TH, a resident of Ngoc Ha Ward, Hanoi, said he does not watch TV regularly, only his favorite football team. This user expressed surprise when he received a notification that the TV signal had stopped when he turned on the device to watch the match between Manchester United and Arsenal on the evening of August 17 on the VieON application.

Duc Minh, a resident of Ho Chi Minh City, also encountered a similar situation when he returned to watch football on TV after the tournament was suspended. “Luckily, I bought a one-year MyTV package, which was still valid, so I switched to that line to watch. Otherwise, I would have had to illegally watch it even though I had paid for it,” said Mr. Minh.

In fact, the application of VieON to cut off the K+ channel group took place from July 16, the first day of the Premier League. The announcement was made at the same time, leaving most customers unprepared. Similar policies were also updated simultaneously from SCTV and ClipTV.

Currently, these units only announce the cut-off of signals, and it is unclear how to compensate users who pay for service packages with K+ channels on a monthly or yearly basis.

On the evening of August 17, services such asFPT Play, VTVCab ON or MyTV still displayed and broadcast K+ channel packages. However, since July, users of these platforms can only buy K+ packages according to the monthly renewal program, with no longer options. Previously, customers could buy 3-6 month or one-year packages to save costs.

Currently, MyTV is the one providing specific information about the K+ cut-off roadmap. This unit will stop selling new service packages with channels from this partner from August 8. From September to the end of the year, MyTV will cut off automatic renewal of monthly subscription programs and advise customers to switch to another group. On January 1, 2026, all K+ channels will be cut off from the platform.

K+ TV service only provides live programming through two main channels, satellite set-up-box and OTT application. Previously, they had to combine with many cable TV partners (VTVCab, SCTV) or IPTV (MyTV, FPT Play) to sell packages. A large number of users watch K+ sports programs, on the infrastructure of other partners.

The fact that many units simultaneously stop broadcasting and announce channel cutting schedules may affect the usage and purchase habits of pay TV packages of Vietnamese users.

In Vietnam, K+ is the result of a joint venture between French television company Canal+ and VTVCab. Afterwards, VTVCab's capital was transferred to VTV for management.

According to DecodeTV , Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada is considering withdrawing from the Vietnamese market because losses have "become significant" and "there is no feasible solution in sight". "We may decide to strongly restructure our operations here, or even consider withdrawing completely," Saada shared.

Canal+’s statement and the suspension of broadcasting by many platforms have sparked rumors that K+ may change its operating plan in Vietnam. At the same time, a series of long-time commentators of this unit announced their departure from the station. However, this unit said that they will continue to operate normally in Vietnam.

Despite the business difficulties, K+'s biggest "weapon" is the multi-year copyright of the English Premier League, the most attractive football tournament on the planet. EPL brings together top clubs such as MU, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, with a large fan base in Vietnam.
