"V-League is the most professional football environment in Vietnam, but many players are too satisfied with the present. They need to confidently develop themselves and expand their vision to the world . They can only improve themselves when they set big goals," the Hanoi Club homepage quoted coach Makoto Teguramori's statement on the morning of July 18.
The dim picture of going abroad has been a long-standing problem for Vietnamese players. The humiliating failures of V-League stars when playing abroad, along with the high salaries of domestic clubs, have become a barrier preventing Vietnamese players from leaving their comfort zone.
Not only coach Teguramori, some foreign coaches, experts and overseas Vietnamese players also share the same opinion about the limitations of domestic players.
Goalkeeper Nguyen Filip recently frankly commented that his domestic colleagues "do not like to receive direct feedback" when sharing publicly with the media.
On the other hand, Vietnamese players also shared the reasons for choosing to play domestically instead of going abroad.
"It's not that we don't have the ability to go abroad. But everyone has to support their family. Playing football close to home allows us to take better care of our family," a V-League player once explained to Tuoi Tre Online.
Also in the interview, coach Makoto Teguramori expressed regret at not being able to complete the championship goal that Hanoi set. He also pointed out the limitations in the quality of V-League.
"This tournament has many breaks, many matches ended in draws. The performance of the clubs is very unstable, including the top and bottom teams, Hanoi Club is no exception," commented coach Teguramori.
Coach Makoto Teguramori has led Hanoi FC since February, helping the team win 9, draw 2 and lose 2 matches in the return leg. In which, the 0-3 loss to Nam Dinh in round 21 destroyed all hopes of competing for the championship, causing Hanoi to regretfully finish second in the 2024-2025 V-League.
"We will try to regain what we have lost, which is to win the championship and return to the continent," said the Japanese coach.
