According to a VNA correspondent in South Korea, the Korean Ministry of Education announced on August 24 that it had approved LG Group's plan to establish the LG Artificial Intelligence Graduate School, marking the first time a Korean enterprise has been allowed to directly operate a graduate training program.
The training facility, located at the LG Management Development Institute's AI Research Center in Magok-dong, western Seoul, will officially open on September 30.
The school plans to enroll 30 graduate students in the field of artificial intelligence this month and begin teaching from March 2026.
The curriculum is designed to be equivalent to traditional postgraduate courses, with degrees awarded by the Ministry of Education. Previously, businesses were only allowed to operate in-house training schools at the undergraduate level.
However, after the Special Law on Human Resources Innovation in Advanced Industries took effect in January 2025, corporations were allowed to open graduate programs in high-tech fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and mobile.
According to LG, the goal of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence is to train top talent, combining academic knowledge with industrial practice, focusing on problem-solving ability in a variety of fields such as electronics, chemicals, energy and biotechnology.
In addition, the school also aims to develop researchers who lead the next generation of AI technologies such as generative AI, multimodal learning and causal inference, and train experts capable of linking research with commercialization.
Ms. Choi Eun Hee, Director General of the Human Resources Policy Department of the Ministry of Education, emphasized that the approval of this model “opens a new framework in developing high-quality human resources for the high-tech industry, while strongly promoting cooperation between businesses and academia.”
The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said they will continue to collect opinions from businesses and study policies to strengthen the enterprise-run postgraduate training system./.
