Google Maps, Apple Maps have not updated new administrative boundaries

Since July 1, Vietnam has operated a two-tier local government model in 34 provincial-level administrative units (28 provinces and 6 centrally-run cities). The country no longer has district-level governments, and many wards and communes have been merged. However, on the morning of July 1, many people said that map applications on Google Maps and Apple Maps still had no new updates on administrative boundaries.

The administrative boundaries of Quang Binh province (old) remain the same and have not been updated on the Google Maps application.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (from Quang Binh) shared: "I intended to guide my friend from Hanoi to her hometown, but when I entered the new address after the merger, Google Maps could not recognize it. When I switched to entering the address in the old way, the result came back."

Another case, Mr. Le Minh Tuan, a driver in Hanoi, said: "I run a technology service so I depend entirely on Google Maps. But now the administrative boundaries have changed, the application has not been updated, if the customer gives me a new address, I don't know how to get there."

Not only Google Maps, many other map applications such as Apple Maps are also in a similar situation. When users look up, the displayed data is still the administrative boundaries before July 1.

On the Apple Maps application, the new administrative boundaries at the ward level have not been updated yet.

While waiting for international map platforms to update, people can refer to the new administrative boundary map according to the document published by the National Planning. However, this document is for reference only and is not an official database integrated by map providers such as Google or Apple.
