Google adds language learning to Translate app

Google integrated it into the Translate translation app to create a language learning tool similar to Duolingo but without the annoying nagging reminder feature.

Google is integrating AI-powered language learning tools into the Translate app. The new feature, currently in beta, can create customized language lessons based on your level and your purpose for learning a new language, such as traveling to another country.

Currently, Google Translate can only help English speakers practice Spanish and French, and Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practice English.

When you tap the new Practice button in the Google Translate app, you can choose your skill level and describe your goals. You can also choose from preset scenarios, such as using the language for professional conversations, everyday interactions, chatting with friends and family, and more.

Google then uses its Gemini AI model to create lessons based on your responses. If you tell Google you have an intermediate level of Spanish and want to communicate with your host family while studying abroad, Translate might create a suggested script to help you learn about mealtimes. From there, you can practice speaking about the topic in Translate or listen to conversations and tap on words you recognize.

“These exercises track your daily learning progress and help you build the skills you need to communicate confidently in another language,” Google product manager Matt Sheets said in a press release. This setup sounds a bit like Duolingo, which also automatically adapts lessons based on your level and goals.

Will Google Translate compete with the popular language learning app Duolingo?

Additionally, Google has launched a live translation feature in the Translate app, which lets you have back-and-forth conversations with someone even if you don't speak the same language. The feature will translate your speech into the speaker's preferred language by generating an audio recording and an AI-generated audio translation, and vice versa. Unlike the live translation feature on the Google Pixel 10, the Google Translate app doesn't try to make the AI-generated audio sound like your voice, but Sheets told reporters the company is "testing different options there."

The live translation feature is currently available to users in the US, India, and Mexico and works in over 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil.
