Pope Francis made his first public appearance on March 23 since being hospitalized for double pneumonia five weeks ago.
Reuters reported that Pope Francis waved to the public from the balcony of Gemelli Hospital in Rome (Italy) before being discharged on the morning of March 23 local time. The Pope thanked the crowd outside the hospital. He then greeted everyone as he left the hospital in a car.
The pope's medical team said the pope will be taken to the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta and will need two more months of rest. Doctors said the pope's current health condition will require a long recovery.

Pope Francis was hospitalized on February 14 for treatment of double pneumonia and spent five weeks without appearing in public. The only public sighting of the pope was a photo released by the Vatican, showing him celebrating Mass on March 16 in the hospital chapel.
Vatican officials said the 89-year-old pope is still performing some work during his treatment. His medical team has been regularly updating him on his health over the past few months, showing some positive changes.
According to Euronews , at the time of his hospitalization due to worsening bronchitis, doctors diagnosed the pope with a complicated respiratory infection caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi, and later discovered pneumonia in both lungs. The past 38 days have also been the longest absence of the pope in his 12-year tenure. Pope Francis had surgery for diverticulitis in 2021 and a hernia surgery in 2023.
