Iron ore edged down as traders assessed mixed macroeconomic data from top consumer China, although a recovery in steel mill profits supported some commodities.

Benchmark iron ore for July delivery (SZZFN5) on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.03% to $93.1 a tonne.

China's crude steel output fell 6.9 percent year-on-year to 86.55 million tonnes in May, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.

Meanwhile, new home prices fell in May, extending a two-year slump, official data showed on Monday, highlighting challenges in the sector despite several rounds of policy support measures.

The country’s factory output growth hit a six-month low in May, although retail sales – a gauge of consumption – accelerated, providing temporary relief amid a fragile truce in the trade war with the United States.

While blast furnace production is peaking, margins remain high and steel mills are not incentivized to cut output, brokerage Galaxy Futures said.

About 60% of blast furnace steel mills in China reported positive profit margins as of June 12, consultancy Mysteel said.

Moreover, iron ore arrivals at ports fell 8.62% week on week to 23.85 million tonnes as of June 13, Mysteel data showed.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE gained, with coking coal and coking coal (DCJcv1) up 0.77% and 0.74%, respectively.
