Philippines opens durian exports to Egypt

While the domestic durian market is quite stable, durian export activities of countries in the Asian region continue to be vibrant.

The Philippines has just gained access to the Egyptian market for fresh durians, after nearly two years of negotiations between the two countries, according to Philstar. The information was confirmed by the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) on May 18.

According to BPI, Egypt’s official opening of its market to Philippine durians is a testament to the country’s strict adherence to phytosanitary and safety regulations. Philippine exporters will need to coordinate with their Egyptian import partners to ensure that import permits are issued through the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine Authority’s electronic system, facilitating the transportation and export process.

Notably, negotiations on opening the Egyptian market began in June 2023, when the Philippines officially expressed its desire to introduce fresh durian into the country’s market. Since then, the two sides have actively coordinated and addressed requirements related to plant quarantine and pest safety.

BPI believes that Egypt is not only a potential consumer market but also a strategic gateway to access the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where demand for tropical fruits is growing strongly.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), last year, Philippine agricultural exports to Egypt nearly doubled to $2.88 million, compared to $1.46 million the previous year. The growth was driven mainly by coconut products, especially dried coconut. The expansion of durian will further diversify the country’s agricultural export portfolio.
