Pork prices continue to fall due to disease impact?

Over the past few days, the price of live pigs in all three regions has been on a downward trend. With the outbreak of African swine fever, many experts believe that farmers are increasing sales to avoid the epidemic, which has contributed to the further decline in pig prices.

According to information from many farmers and businesses on the afternoon of July 17, the price of live pigs in all three regions decreased by 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg compared to the previous day, down to a common level of 62,000 - 67,000 VND/kg depending on the region and quality of the pig.

Specifically, in the North, the price of live pigs in many localities such as Lai Chau and Lao Cai is 64,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the region; while Hanoi , Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, and Bac Ninh are down to 65,000 VND/kg, equal to many other provinces and cities in the region. Meanwhile, Hai Phong is recorded as the locality with the best price in the North at 66,000 VND/kg.

In the Central and Central Highlands provinces, the price of live pigs continued to decrease. Accordingly, Nghe An is now down to 64,000 VND/kg; Ha Tinh, Quang Tri and Hue are down to 63,000 VND/kg; Gia Lai is 62,000 VND/kg. The remaining provinces are generally in the range of 63,000 - 64,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, although the price of live pigs in the South has decreased following the general trend of all three regions, the average price is still at the highest level in the country.

Specifically, most provinces such as An Giang , Vinh Long, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh... are recorded at a common level of 64,000 - 66,000 VND/kg depending on the locality. Ca Mau alone is the highest in the region and the whole country with 67,000 VND/kg.

Thus, after many weeks hovering around 65,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, the price of live pigs has recently tended to decrease.

Although the decrease is not too strong, many experts believe that with the complicated developments of African swine fever in the past few weeks, a large number of pigs have been destroyed in all three regions, many farmers are facing the risk of great losses.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online recently, Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, vice president of Dong Nai Livestock Association, said that the epidemic situation has been quite complicated for a long time, but this is the peak time.

"Many farmers accept to sell pigs earlier than normal to avoid the epidemic. Understanding this psychology, many traders force down the purchase price. Previously, slow consumption demand caused the price of live pigs to gradually decrease after reaching the peak, now traders are forcing the price down even more," Mr. Doan assessed.

After a period of rapid increase, by the first half of March 2025, the price of live pigs in the South peaked at VND 84,000/kg. However, in early June 2025, the price dropped to VND 75,000/kg, and has continued to decrease since then.

With the current price of live pigs and the price of animal feed cooling down, many farmers said they can still make a stable profit if they are not affected by the epidemic.
