Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho are part of the reason why the atmosphere at Manchester United is toxic. |
Speaking during his tour of the United States, Shaw told The Times that things had deteriorated at Old Trafford in recent years and that the club needed a radical change. The 30-year-old defender said: “It’s not hard to see how bad things are at the club. Over the last few years, the environment at Manchester United has been very negative. It’s become toxic, it’s unhealthy.”
Current situation
Shaw also stressed that players like him need a positive, energetic and happy environment to be able to play freely and express themselves better. However, the reality at Manchester United has been completely opposite over the past few years, with a gloomy atmosphere often pervading the dressing room.
While not directly addressing the cause of the club’s “toxicity”, Shaw admitted that the dressing room is now very united and everyone must put the team first. “Everyone needs to understand that we have to get through this together. There is no slacking off in the group of players. The manager has made it clear that everyone needs to put the team first,” he added.
The Guardian believes that at Old Trafford in recent years, players like Marcus Rashford (who recently moved to Barcelona), Alejandro Garnacho or Jadon Sancho, are partly responsible for the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United. That has made coach Amorim determined to clean up the squad, including eliminating the three names mentioned above.
Rashford was once a symbol of MU both on the field and in real life. However, in recent years, his behavior has caused a lot of controversy.

She just successfully pushed Rashford away. |
Last year, Rashford was dropped from the squad for holding a birthday party after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, an action that was deemed unprofessional by manager Ruben Amorim. Rashford has also been criticised on numerous occasions for his poor form and inappropriate attitude.
Shaw, in an interview with The Times , did not directly mention Rashford, but hinted that such behaviour contributed to a weakening of team spirit. Alejandro Garnacho was once expected to inherit the role of Cristiano Ronaldo, but faced questions over his attitude and form in the second half of the 2024/25 season.
Even after the defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, Garnacho even publicly expressed his attitude to coach Amorim and was dropped from the first team. Shaw emphasized that “if you don’t do it right, you don’t play”, implying that Garnacho and other players did not bring the necessary positivity to the team.
Amorim's Efforts
Garnacho's attitude, which was seen as lacking commitment and not fitting into the new culture that Amorim was building, made the young talent part of the problem rather than the solution.
Jadon Sancho, who joined United for £73m from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, is another example of how individual attitudes can damage a team.

Sancho is stuck at Manchester United. |
Sancho's conflict with coach Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2024, when he was dropped from the squad due to poor form, even led to the young talent expressing his attitude publicly on social networks. Since then, Sancho no longer has a future at Manchester United.
The toxic atmosphere at Manchester United over the years has been a result not just of poor performance but also of the way the players interact with each other and the coaching staff. Rashford, Garnacho and Sancho have, to varying degrees, created problems with attitude, discipline and commitment, undermining team spirit.
Amorim, who took over in November 2024, has dropped several senior players, including the three above, as part of a clean-up effort. Shaw supports the decision, saying “everyone needs to put the team first,” but also admits that the damage from the previous culture has been significant.
Of course, the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United is not the product of a few individuals, but Rashford, Garnacho and Sancho have all contributed to the problem. From unprofessional behaviour, negative attitudes to conflicts with the coaching staff, these three players have become symbols of what needs to change at Old Trafford. Under Amorim, United are working to rebuild the culture of the club.
