Relatives said that two days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had eaten hot pot, then felt severe abdominal pain in the epigastric region, accompanied by nausea, and took medication but it did not improve. The patient was taken by his family to Xuyen A Long An General Hospital for examination.

On June 25, specialist doctor Truong Minh Hieu, Head of the Endoscopy Department, said that after examination, the patient was indicated for an esophagogastroduodenoscopy for examination. During the endoscopy, the doctors discovered a foreign object about 3.5 cm long (a lemongrass branch) piercing the stomach wall, the surrounding mucosa was edematous, and the gastric antrum mucosa had 2 ulcers about 0.6 - 0.8 cm in size.

Immediately, the doctors used specialized forceps to remove the foreign object, and the lemongrass stalk was safely removed. After monitoring, the patient's condition stabilized and he was discharged to return home.

Dr. Hieu said that having a foreign body in the digestive tract is very dangerous and requires immediate treatment, otherwise it will leave some serious complications such as the foreign body can puncture the esophagus, causing bleeding, leading to inflammation, abscesses... in some cases, it can be life-threatening.

Normally, when choking on foreign objects such as bones, toothpicks, etc., people often try to spit, use their hands to pick out the bones, or eat large pieces of rice to swallow them down the stomach... But in reality, these actions will cause the pharyngeal mucosa to be scratched, infected, and inflamed. When swallowed further, the bones will go deeper, or be embedded deeper, making it difficult to remove the bones.

"In case of accidental swallowing of a foreign object, the patient should be taken to the nearest medical facility for examination by a doctor and appropriate treatment. Patients should absolutely not treat foreign object choking with folk remedies such as swallowing rice balls, patting the head, etc., which can cause the foreign object to get stuck deeper or cause more damage to the digestive tract," the doctor advised.
