People bitten by wild monkeys
Located more than 100 m above sea level, Thien Van Hai Phong forest hill with an area of 163 hectares surrounds many residential areas at the gateway to the city, preserving biodiversity with endemic flora and wildlife. On the top of the hill is also the Northeast Regional Hydrometeorological Station. Built during the French colonial period (1902). Here, many people often come to check-in, exercise to improve their health, and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna ecosystem.
Mr. Nguyen Van Co on Tran Nhan Tong Street (Phu Lien Ward) said: "We are very excited to see the natural forest trees. Occasionally, we also see squirrels and monkeys jumping on the branches in the forest...".
Although very proud of the green Thien Van forest hill, gifted by nature, recently some people are worried when witnessing some wild animals growing and developing in the forest hill straying into residential areas, affecting life.
Ms. Pham Thi Loan in residential group number 6 Tay Son (Kien An ward) said that for nearly a year now, every day people have seen two monkeys coming down to people's gardens to look for ripe fruit.
In Tran Thanh Ngo 8 residential group, people also reported that they often see weasels and squirrels coming down to some fruit gardens or wandering around some houses...

Notably, since the beginning of August, some residents have been worried when a few monkeys strayed into people's houses and bit some people, causing injuries. Ms. Ninh Thi Teo in Kha Lam 3 residential group (Kien An ward) who was just discharged from the hospital after being bitten by a monkey in early August recounted: "At noon, I had just finished eating when I saw a monkey running down to the yard and wanting to bite some items in the yard. I used a stick to chase it away, but the monkey jumped on me, causing me to fall down and have to go to the hospital to get 6 stitches because the monkey bit my hand."
According to Ms. Teo, some students and security guards at the school near her house were also bitten by monkeys...
Need guidance and timely handling
According to local people, they are always proud of the biodiversity and wildlife of Thien Van forest hill, so they hope that the authorities and local government will have solutions to guide and prevent straying wildlife in a timely manner.
In fact, in residential groups 8, 4, and 6 (Kien An ward), when seeing some wild animals coming down to the gardens, people only chase them away, some even bring unused fruit from home to feed them.
However, for some people living along the forest hills, when they encounter cases of wild animals disturbing their lives, they are confused with this situation. The temporary solution is that some people coordinate to protect the neighborhood and schools around the area. When they discover wild animals causing trouble many times, they temporarily capture them so they do not cause harm, then report to the local authorities and relevant agencies...

Deputy Head of Hai Phong Forest Protection Department Mac Dang Manh said that after receiving information that some wild animals were looking for houses on the edge of Thien Van forest, the unit directed its subordinate units and forest protection departments to coordinate with local authorities to increase propaganda for people to protect themselves. At the same time, it actively coordinated with functional agencies to protect wild animals in accordance with international conventions.
In the case of some households temporarily keeping wild animals while they cause trouble, the department will send forest rangers to coordinate with local authorities to guide people to hand them over to the Wildlife Protection Organization. Along with that, people are reminded not to use measures that harm or injure wild animals such as: trapping, beating, poisoning... At the same time, strictly handle violations of the law related to some cases of taking advantage of wild animals to stimulate curiosity in the community, illegally capturing wild animals...
Forest rangers note that people need to understand the habits and roles of wild animals in the ecosystem and the impact of forest destruction on their habitat. From there, they guide people on measures to protect forests and maintain a clean environment to protect wild animals, prevent these animals from straying into residential areas, and minimize their presence in the community. People can also use natural repellents, such as: sounds, lights, and scents that wild animals do not like so that they can leave on their own...
In the long term, protecting the lives of people and wildlife in the forest ecosystem requires close attention and coordination between authorities, local governments and people. It is necessary to prevent deforestation and illegal logging activities that affect the habitat and food sources of wildlife.
Increase afforestation, create sustainable natural habitats for wildlife to live and shelter, and reduce their dependence on residential areas. Focus on building conservation corridors and connecting forests so that wildlife can move safely in hilly and forested areas.
