Every August, hundreds of hectares of Gia Ty wood forest bloom, creating a beautiful landscape along National Highway 20 in Dinh Quan and Tan Phu districts (old), Dong Nai province.

The Teektona Grandis tree has the scientific name Teektona Grandis, commonly known as Teak wood, or the Pistachio tree. According to research documents, the Pistachio tree is native to Southeast Asia, often found in monsoon forest vegetation, is a large tree, 30-40m tall and deciduous in the dry season.

In Dong Nai, Gia Ty forest was planted in the 1950s in Tan Phu and Dinh Quan districts (old) to make gun butts and create a large vegetation cover along National Highway 20. Currently, Gia Ty forest is protected and maintained with an area of over 160 hectares, most of which are trees 50-60 years old.

Mr. Ho Huu Duc, an officer of La Nga Agricultural Seed Station (the unit that manages and protects the forest), said that the unit currently manages and protects 165 hectares of Gia Ty forest. Most of the Gia Ty forest area consists of large trees, with a trunk diameter of about two people hugging. “This is a large tree species that adapts to tropical environments and geology with soil mixed with laterite like in Dinh Quan and Tan Phu areas,” Mr. Duc shared, adding that Gia Ty wood is a good wood and can be used for many purposes.

According to Mr. Duc, the Gia Ty tree has long been known as a wood used to make gun stocks. The characteristic of Gia Ty wood is that it can withstand very high temperatures. With normal burning, the Gia Ty tree only burns the leaves, the trunk is not affected.

In addition to the protected and strictly managed forest area, for many years, households with land in Dinh Quan and Tan Phu areas have also planted Gia Ty trees for commercial purposes. Mr. Nguyen Khac Dinh, a resident of the old Dinh Quan commune (now Phu Vinh commune, Dong Nai province) said that Gia Ty wood is famous for its high durability, resistance to termites, warping and beautiful color. In addition to making gun stocks, this type of wood is also popular in the high-end furniture manufacturing, shipbuilding and construction industries.

Around July to August every year, the Gia Ty forest along Highway 20 begins to bloom. From above, the Gia Ty forest looks like a giant carpet of flowers, with white and pale yellow colors like floating clouds.

A forest ranger in Dinh Quan, Tan Phu said that in recent years, thanks to strict management and protection, the number of people illegally entering Gia Ty forest has been very low. Many years ago, there was a boom in people entering the forest to collect dry leaves of Gia Ty trees to sell to foreign traders, but in recent years, no similar incidents have occurred.

Local authorities of communes where Gia Ty forests are located, including Tan Phu, Phu Vinh, and Phu Hoa, regularly propagate to local people not to encroach on the forest, protect the ecology of Gia Ty forest, and create a unique environmental landscape of Tan Phu and Dinh Quan./.
