East Asia in turmoil over North Korea's missile launch

According to Yonhap, this is the first ICBM launch since December last year. The South Korean military said the missile was launched on a high trajectory, flying about 1,000 km before falling into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. According to Seoul's initial assessment, it could be a new solid-fuel long-range ballistic missile. Japan said the missile flew for a record 86 minutes, reaching a maximum altitude of about 7,000 km.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said it was an "appropriate military action" to signal North Korea's will to respond to rivals who have deliberately escalated the regional situation and threatened Pyongyang's security.

In response, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol called for stern measures to deal with North Korea's "provocations" and issued a ban on exports to Pyongyang of materials for solid-fuel missiles.

Japan and the United States have condemned North Korea. On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing was closely following developments after North Korea tested an ICBM, stressing that maintaining peace and stability was in the interests of all parties.
