The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2029. This will create a strategic traffic axis connecting the Southeast region with the Southwest and Central Highlands, promoting the circulation of goods from industrial parks, urban areas to seaports, airports and vice versa, contributing to creating new development space.

Long way home
Currently, from Ho Chi Minh City to Ba Ria - Vung Tau , there are 3 main routes: from National Highway 1A or Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway or Cat Lai ferry route through Nhon Trach, then join National Highway 51. For a long time, National Highway 1A has been chosen by few people because it takes too long due to the high traffic density. Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway, considered the lifeline connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, has been frequently congested for many years. Mr. Pham Nguyen Thanh, residing in Nam Long Ward, Thu Duc City, said that from Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau via National Highway 51 is overloaded. The distance is about 90km, but when there is a traffic jam, it takes more than 5 hours. According to statistics from the Department of Construction of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, National Highway 51 is seriously overloaded. It was designed with a scale of 6 lanes, but the actual traffic volume has exceeded 5 times the original design, up to about 60,500 vehicles/day and night.
Meanwhile, although the infrastructure connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong is more convenient thanks to many routes such as National Highways 1, 1K, 13, DT 743 and bridges such as Phu Cuong, Ben Suc, Phu Long... the main route is still National Highway 13 which is "congested" at the gateway to Ho Chi Minh City. From the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Thu Dau Mot City is about 30km, but the travel time often lasts from 1-2 hours or more tiring during rush hour.
Projects to look forward to
At this time, many people expressed great expectations for the connecting traffic system, eliminating long-standing bottlenecks. Talking to SGGP reporters, Acting Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction Tran Quang Lam said that existing projects will be completed soon to open up traffic connection opportunities for the region. That is the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 project - an important route connecting Thu Duc City with Nhon Trach District and Ba Ria - Vung Tau. The section passing through Ho Chi Minh City will be opened to traffic at the end of this year, and the entire section will be completed by 2026. Along with that, the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway connecting to Ho Chi Minh City will also be put into use this year.
Ho Chi Minh City is also implementing the project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND from the budget. The project will be completed in 2026, with a scale of 8 lanes, which will fundamentally solve traffic congestion on this route. A project that is expected to be implemented quickly is the expansion of National Highway 13, from Binh Trieu Bridge to Binh Phuoc intersection. The 5.9km long route will be expanded to 60m with 10 lanes, including an elevated lane, with a total investment of more than 20,900 billion VND. After bidding to select investors and signing contracts, the project will start construction in the second quarter of 2026 and be completed in 2028.
Another piece of information that people are very interested in is that Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai have agreed to build 3 more bridges to connect the two localities. Of these, there will be 2 road bridges connecting directly to Nhon Trach district, namely Cat Lai bridge and Phu My 2 bridge. In order to "support" the operation of Long Thanh airport, there will be an additional Thu Thiem - Long Thanh urban railway line, about 42km long, designed speed of 120km/h, with an estimated investment of about 3.5 billion USD.
“In the 2026-2030 period, the city plans to allocate up to VND766,000 billion in public investment capital for the transport sector. This year, the total public investment capital for transport is about VND36,433 billion, accounting for 43% of the city's total public investment capital. The Department is urgently preparing to invest in 140 projects, including 98 transport projects and 42 technical infrastructure projects. In the early third quarter, the Department will submit 22 large-scale projects such as Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, Can Gio Bridge, Ring Road 2 (section from Nguyen Van Linh - Ho Hoc Lam),” said Mr. Tran Quang Lam.
Another piece of information, quite attractive to the people, according to the Director of the Department of Construction of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, Le Ngoc Linh, the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway component 3 project has been basically completed, expected to be put into operation in September this year. Thus, in just a short time, the travel time between Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City will be shortened, significantly reducing the load on National Highway 51.
- Director of Department of Construction of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province LE NGOC LINH:
Dynamic inter-regional connectivity projects
Phuoc An Bridge Project, connecting Phu My Town (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) with Nhon Trach District, has a total length of about 4.3km. It is an important bridge connecting traffic because goods from Cai Mep - Thi Vai Port can circulate along the inter-port road to Nhon Trach District to get on the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway; Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay without having to circulate through National Highway 51. The project has a total investment of 4,900 billion VND. The province is also closely coordinating with localities in the region to deploy investment in Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 4 connecting Cai Mep International Port, Long Thanh International Airport, etc.
- Director of Binh Duong Province Department of Construction NGUYEN ANH MINH:
"Dream" of making metro
In the planning of the transport system development, Binh Duong is developing the TOD transport model (urban development according to the orientation of public transport development). Specifically, the Binh Duong urban railway is being researched and developed by the authorities for line No. 1, starting at station S1 in the center of Binh Duong new city (Hoa Phu ward) and ending at Suoi Tien station, with a total length of 32.43km.
