To create quality human resources, experts say it is necessary to link training with social needs and the art market, thereby updating the program according to new skills and job positions.

Literature and art have always been given attention by the Party and the State and are considered to be very important and especially delicate areas of culture. Never before have artists had such favorable conditions to publish and disseminate their creations as they do today.

That is the opinion of Mr. Hoang Ha, Editor-in-Chief of Culture and Arts Magazine (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) at the scientific workshop "Reviewing the movement and development of Vietnamese literature and arts 50 years after the country's reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025)" held on June 27, in Hanoi.

Vietnamese art boldly breaks through

The workshop aimed to summarize and evaluate the outstanding achievements of Vietnamese literature and art over the past 50 years, with the participation of nearly 100 delegates who are experts, researchers, managers, artists from research institutes; cultural and art training schools; theaters, art units; specialized literature and art associations at the central and local levels; and media agencies.

According to Mr. Hoang Ha, in the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, literature and art fulfilled their glorious mission of accompanying the nation, reflecting, encouraging and urging our army and people to defeat foreign invaders, gain independence, freedom, unify the country, and advance to socialism, with the great victory of Spring 1975.

The country's "literary and artistic map" is a continuous strip. Over the past 50 years, Vietnamese literature and art have continued the source of revolutionary tradition, closely following reality and the breath of life, expressing the aspiration for truth, goodness, and beauty, contributing to nurturing the soul, thoughts, feelings, and spirit of the Vietnamese people.

Literature and art reflect many aspects of life, including post-war issues, with new perspectives, delving into personal fate and tragedy, thereby promoting core values: Humanity, patriotism, tolerance, altruism...

Along with opening up and international integration, cultural exchange has been enhanced, many schools of literature and art have been absorbed, some researchers have mentioned the postmodern creative trend in literature, surpassing previous creative frameworks.

Many literary works have been translated abroad; many art programs have been introduced to international friends through cultural days and cultural weeks; some film works have won international awards... thereby, contributing to promoting the image of the country and people of Vietnam to the world .

In particular, thanks to scientific and technological achievements, many literary and artistic works are widely spread on the Internet, bringing new attitudes to creators and the public. It is proactive, two-way interaction; thereby, helping creators grasp the tastes and enjoyment needs of the public to be able to create new works that attract the public.

“The development of the art market in recent years has made an important contribution to the development of the cultural industry, pioneered by the film industry in the South,” said Mr. Hoang Ha.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Toan Thang, former Director of the Institute of Culture and Development, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, said that in the 50 years since the country's reunification, Vietnamese literature and art have developed strongly with great achievements in all forms and genres.

“The team of artists and intellectuals across the country are very devoted to the country and the people, have proactively inherited the quintessence of pre-1975 literature and art, continued to affirm the superior values of Vietnamese revolutionary literature and art, assimilated the values of world literature and art, and boldly made breakthroughs,” said Mr. Thang.

However, besides the achievements, the field of literature and art still has limitations, which is the lack of works of high ideological and artistic value, reflecting the true stature of the innovation cause, and having the power to strongly move the public.

Experts say that in reality, there are works that are heavily entertainment-oriented, easily following trivial tastes; some works reflect deadlocks, darkness, and distance from real life. Traditional art faces many difficulties in maintaining its activities.

Theoretical and critical work has also had certain achievements but not commensurate with expectations. Policies for literature and art still have many obstacles and inadequacies...

Not creating 'art workers'

At the workshop, experts proposed effective solutions to build and develop Vietnamese literature and art as an important element of advanced Vietnamese culture, imbued with national identity, making worthy contributions to the cause of innovation and national construction.

One of the issues of concern is training specific human resources for the literature and arts sectors.

People's Artist Tran Ly Ly, President of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Dance Academy, pointed out many limitations and shortcomings that have prevented the training of dance and other arts from making real breakthroughs.

In order to promote advantages and overcome limitations in education and training, People's Artist Tran Ly Ly believes that it is necessary to build a team of lecturers and artists with global thinking, support personal development, improve art management capacity, communication, and personal creativity.

“Encourage learners to think independently, creatively and critically early. Art training must aim to train each learner to have their own voice, style and personality; not to train ‘art workers’ who focus on technique and uniformity,” said Ms. Tran Ly Ly.

In addition, art education and training needs to develop in an open, flexible and interdisciplinary direction, increase the application of digital technology in teaching, establish training links with domestic and foreign art institutions, thereby creating conditions for the exchange of students, lecturers, performances and international scholarships, and create a bridge with the international art market.

People's Artist Tran Ly Ly also mentioned the issue of nurturing audiences and the young generation of artists, because audiences are the most important art lovers and critics. To do so, we must introduce art subjects into primary schools from an early age in the form of experiential art, educating students' ability to appreciate art.

Giving his opinion on this issue, Dr. Hoang Minh Cua, Hanoi University of Culture, said that innovation in education and training of literature and arts in Vietnam today in the context of globalization needs to be based on domestic practices; at the same time, learning from international trends is an inevitable need of education and training.

Specifically, Dr. Hoang Minh Cua believes that it is necessary to link training with social needs and the art market through labor market surveys, thereby updating the program according to new skills and job positions such as game scriptwriting, podcast writing, digital content design, digital creativity, bringing students closer to the practice of creating products.

“To innovate education and training in literature and art in a modern direction, it is necessary to have interdisciplinary thinking, connecting technology, media and people. Only then can artists create works that have widespread influence in the current digital and globalized era,” said Dr. Hoang Minh Cua./.
